SCOPE

Reporting to the Director of the Black Perspectives Office and Equity Office, the incumbent provides expertise in the promotion of an equitable and inclusive University environment. Often dealing with sensitive and complex issues, the Advisor maintains the confidentiality and integrity of information and/or materials that they develop and to which they have access and carries out their functions using persuasion and conciliation skills to develop and build a reputation for trust, integrity, specialized knowledge, collegiality and collaboration. The incumbent provides specialized consulting, advising and intervention services in response to University anti-Black racism concerns, and supports the Director of the Black Perspectives Office and Equity Office.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Foster and maintain respectful, collaborative, open and positive relationships with colleagues and University members concerning the BPO’s mandate, values, and functions.
  • Advise the Director of the Black Perspectives Office and Equity Office on any emerging issues impacting members of Concordia’s Black community. Stay abreast of current trends in anti-racist and Black-specific resource programming across the larger Montreal community and other Canadian universities.
  • Lead the content development for in-person, online and recorded Black Perspectives and anti-Black racism prevention training programs as well as future training updates and modules, and speaker series on special topics.
  • Deliver workshops and trainings for Concordia students, faculty and staff on Black Perspectives and anti-Black racism prevention and promote awareness and understanding of matters such as unconscious bias and what constitutes a respectful and inclusive university.
  • Collaborate with the Director of the Black Perspectives Office and Equity Office and University Communications Services on an effective communications strategy, which includes the BPO website and other communications tools to increase awareness and engagement with BPO activities and as a resource for the Concordia community to consult on concerns regarding anti-Black racism brought forth by faculty, staff, students, family members, and other community members.
  • Participate in evaluating the BPO’s workshops, outreach initiatives, communication strategies, and promotional materials.
  • Conduct intake interviews for those experiencing anti-Black racism, advise, assist, and design effective response and/intervention plans in a knowledgeable, effective, and constructive manner. Apply in-depth knowledge of Concordia's resources, policies, and procedures, as well as best practices, to anti-Black racism-related questions, concerns, and situations commensurate with the functions of the Black Perspectives Office. Meet deadlines and evaluate results.
  • Responsible for the preparation of reports including the gathering and analysis of casework data, statistics, findings, trends, recommendations, and information.
  • In collaboration with Wellness and Support Services as well as other university partners, design and deliver specialized training for students, faculty and staff, including seminars/workshops on anti-Black racism.
  • Assist with developing and overseeing programming to engage, create a sense of community and networking paths for Concordia’s Black students, faculty and staff, including special events and conferences, etc.
  • Review and analyze concerns, incidents, and situations to develop and suggest appropriate measures for resolution and/or redress in accordance with the values of anti-racism commensurate with the functions of the Black Perspectives Office.
  • In collaboration with university partners such as the Student Success Centre, NouLa Centre for Black Students, Campus Wellness, Office of Community and Social Impact, University Advancement, Enrolment Services, Co-operative Education Institute and Career and Planning Services, develop programming and opportunities for Black students throughout their Concordia experience.
  • In collaboration with the Director of the Black Perspectives Office and Equity Office, Deputy Provost, the Vice-Provost of Faculty Development and Inclusion, the Associate Vice-President of Human Resources, the Office of Rights and Responsibilities, and student leadership, develops strategies and approaches to ensure culturally safe and respectful spaces and services for Black students, faculty and staff.
  • Work with the Equity Office Department Assistant to update the BPO website and the Black Presence Hub. Represent the Black Perspectives Office on committees, internally and externally, as requested. Performs other duties in support of the BPO and the Director of the Black Perspectives Office and Equity Office.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, English, Communications, Education or in a field relevant to the role’s primary responsibilities and 2-4 years related experience. Knowledge of the University environment and of the Quebec higher education system an asset.
  • Significant experience working with the Black community, and knowledge of Black-specific resource programming across the larger Montreal community and other Canadian universities.
  • Experience in providing advice and support to senior management.
  • Good spoken and written English and French (Level 4) to and deal with complex situations in both official languages.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft office suite (EXCEL & Word)
  • Excellent interpersonal, facilitation, organizational, communication, and team-building skills.
  • Capacity to engage members of diverse communities and skilled in a variety of consultation techniques, protocols, and strategies. Superior ability to maintain a high degree of professionalism and discretion.
