About this Opportunity

This opportunity is for a six-month contract working with the Interior, Design, and Drafting team Technologists and will focus only on the following tasks:

  • compiling and filing as-built drawings, ensuring accuracy and coordination with on-site realities
  • updating building floor plans and site records as a result of renovations or new building developments

This term position will not be extended past the six months.

Job Summary

Reporting to the Space Planning Manager, the Design & Drafting Technician provides building and site records management and technical support for the Facilities Management Department at the University of Victoria. The Technician supports project management, design and construction of capital projects and tenant improvements for buildings across campus. Duties include creation of base drawings, updating of as-built record drawings, performing on-site space and records inventory reviews, updating of university space management records, design and creation of technical details, and drawing assembly and distribution.

Involvement in projects requires flexibility to work weekends or after hours in accordance with project schedules; work requires physical, sight and hearing abilities in moving fixtures and equipment.

Job Requirements

Experience:
This position requires a level of education, training, and experience equivalent to five years of related experience, including working with AutoCAD and maintaining associated records.

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered. Preference may be given to those with experience in post-secondary facilities management or in architectural, interior design, or engineering consulting environments.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD Architecture 2020 or higher, Adobe Creative Suite, and Microsoft Office (including MS Project).
  • Knowledge of general office procedures, construction industry practices, and project management processes.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Effective organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize work independently.
  • Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and maintain a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and sound judgment.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive and respectful workplace.
  • Ability to interpret technical documents and translate them into accurate drawings and specifications.

Specialized Knowledge / Education:

  • AIBC Registered Architectural Technologist, or an equivalent designation.
  • Formal training in AutoCAD.
  • Familiarity with purchasing processes, tenders, contracts, and proposals, as well as applicable building codes, is an asset.
