Overview
As the heart of the Play Pals program, you help create a fun, welcoming space where kids can learn and grow through play! You plan and lead activities that spark joy and curiosity, while helping children build important skills like:
- Making friends and learning to play together.
- Expressing emotions and building confidence
- Using their hands and bodies to explore and move to develop fine and gross motor skills.
- Getting ready for preschool or kindergarten
Your goal is to make every child feel included, supported, and excited to learn—setting them up for a smooth and happy transition into their next big adventure!
This position is temporary part time and ends on approximately August 31, 2026.
Responsibilities
- Plans, facilitates, and evaluates the delivery of age-appropriate play-based programs and activities that align with early childhood principles
- Modifies programs and activities to accommodate the abilities/needs of the children.
- Leads the early learning activities including stories, music, activities and art to help children to grow linguistically, physically, socially and emotionally
- Ensures the safety and enjoyment of participants through communication, continual monitoring, and reinforcement of program and facility rules and addresses unsafe and/or inappropriate behaviours.
- Responds to participants’ immediate concerns and/or needs
- Develops and maintains positive working relationships with parents/guardians of the program participants, community partners and Inclusion Services
- Provides current early learning and care information to parents and the community and connects them with the appropriate resources to support their needs.
- Responsible for set-up and take-down of program equipment daily and ensures program materials and equipment are in safe working order and are cleaned and sanitized.
- Ensures program follows relevant Early Childhood Education standards of practice.
- Adheres to policy and procedures established for City of Kitchener facilities and programs
- Reviews emergency procedures with program participants and follows established procedures during emergencies (e.g. Fire drills and procedure)
- Responds to unplanned events and incidents, and provides first aid as required
- Completes records and reports including attendance and accident/incident reports.
- Respects parental and cultural values, goals, and expectations
- Maintains confidentiality of program and participant information
- Acts as a liaison between the community centre staff, participants and/or parents/guardians
- Attend meetings as required
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Grade 12 diploma.
- Diploma in Early Childhood Education.
- 1-2 years of related experience implementing early years recreation/learning programs for children 3-5 years old.
- Registered and in good standing with the College of Early Childhood Educators
- Provide a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check at your own expense as a condition of employment.
- Valid CPR Level “C” and Standard First Aid Certificate.
- Ability to work in a variety of settings with diverse groups and populations.
- Knowledge of community resources for families with children under 5 years old.
- Knowledge of child development, family dynamics, community resources and
- play-based early learning
- Experience in planning, implementing, facilitating and evaluating early childhood recreation learning programs for children under 5 years old
- Ability to communicate effectively using tact, discretion, and diplomacy in contacts of a difficult or specialized nature.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Physical ability to perform the required duties and carry weights of up to 40 lbs.
- Reliable with a good attitude and employment record.
