Position Description
Responsibilities
- Assesses family applications regarding CBE’s Extraordinary Circumstances Waiver Program.
- Ensures that there is sufficient understanding of the family’s situation and provides approval or denial of that waiver.
- Validates information submitted.
- Provides family with written rationale for decision.
- Responds to families queries on the decision in a professional and respectful manner.
- Ensures assessments of applications to the waiver program are completed in accordance with stated guidelines and in an equitable and coherent manner.
- Answers queries from public and staff regarding the waiver program, the application process and the criteria for approval.
- Investigates and responds to complaints regarding waiver program eligibility and service levels.
- Effectively works within CBE system applications for waiver management.
- Maintains accurate documentation.
- Provides data and reports on a regular basis regarding waiver program for system understanding and decision-making.
- Promotes a better understanding between the families and CBE through an in-depth knowledge of the public education system and the processes under which a family can access financial relief for fees.
- Supports the family in understanding available community agency resources and services given extraordinary circumstances families are facing.
- Supports in facilitating conversation between families, schools and staff, when requested, to provide support in articulating an individual family’s circumstance and their need for leniency in financial matters.
- Liaises with internal and external stakeholders to effectively support families.
- Recommends adjustments to the waiver program to support parents more effectively and/or to improve organizational efficiencies.
- Remains current with respect to related Calgary Board of Education policies and procedures.
- Performs other related duties as assigned to meet the purpose and accountabilities of the role.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- A university degree in a related area such as guidance, counseling or social work.
- A minimum of five years related experience in an educational organization or social aid profession, including work with culturally diverse populations.
- Public sector experience is considered an asset.
- An equivalent combination of directly related post-secondary education and related experience may be considered.
Demonstrated Skills and Competencies
- Must be able to effectively communicate ideas or concepts
- Strong customer service orientation
- The ability to work effectively and productively independently or in an interdisciplinary team
- Must have the ability to mediate problem solving processes involving team members, school personnel, and families
- Requires attention to detail, accuracy, ability to meet timelines and multi-tasking
- Relevant computer skills appropriate to the position, i.e. spreadsheets, word processing, etc
- Above average interpersonal, organizational, verbal and written communication skills
- Personal suitability
