Protection Services Officer

Regular Part-Time

(Up to 24 hours per week; must be available to work weekdays, evenings, weekends and evening events; Monday-Sunday at a variety of times)

Located in Toronto, the Art Gallery of Ontario is one of the largest art museums in North America, attracting approximately one million visitors annually. The AGO Collection of more than 120,000 works of art ranges from cutting-edge contemporary art to significant works by Indigenous and Canadian artists and European masterpieces.

We are currently seeking a Protection Services Officer to join our Protection Services team. Under the direction of the Protection Services Director, the incumbent will monitor entrances, galleries, visitors and the physical plant to ensure the safety of the collection, visitors, staff and physical plant is maintained. They will ensure all security procedures, health and safety policies, and appropriate legislative laws are followed and provide first response to all Emergency situations.

The rate of pay for this position is $22.40 – $27.96 per hour.

What is this position responsible for?

Common Tasks

  • Responds to alarms; investigates incidents.
  • Responds to inquiries for information and directions.
  • Front line Customer service.
  • Monitors visitors; ensures security procedures are followed.
  • Pro-actively patrolling, and reporting
  • Access Control to restricted areas and galleries

Assignments (Performs the duties as per assignment)

a) Building

  • Issues badges to visitors, clients and trades personnel.
  • Verifies authorized individuals and controls access.
  • Provides escorts – both cash and people as required.
  • Makes announcements on the emergency fire system as required.
  • Responds to emergencies, distress calls, or calls for back up.
  • Conducts proactive patrols of building and exterior; checks equipment, turns on/off lights, locks/unlocks doors, secures and sets alarms, logs findings and/or irregularities.
  • Responsible for undertaking bag checks on all packages/equipment taken into or leaving the building and issues property passes.
  • Answers telephone, responds to general inquiries and redirects calls.

b) Control Room

  • Monitors environmental and security equipment; notifies appropriate staff as required.
  • Records/logs incidents.
  • Checks/Logs temperatures readings.
  • Responds to emergencies.
  • Systems trouble shooting - identifies, records and reports of all Systems deficiencies and inconsistencies.

c) Gallery

  • Conducts proactive patrolling of all Gallery Spaces identifying health and/or safety concern, visitors in distress, suspicious activity, art removal forms in place etc.
  • Monitors for, and addresses, prohibited items in gallery space
  • Frontline interaction with visitors.
  • First Responders to First Aid situations, lost persons, emergency situations, etc.
  • Distributes admission tags, checks members’ cards.
  • Operates elevator (s).
  • Provides direction to visitors and school groups.
  • Executes orderly clearing of gallery at closing and secures Gallery Spaces.

d) Shipping Dock

  • Conducts daily inspections of work area
  • Responsible for undertaking bag checks on all packages/equipment taken into or leaving the building and issues property passes.
  • Ensures Shipping Dock area is safe and records and reports all infractions to supervisor.
  • Responsible for all vehicles and vehicle safety concerns both within the dock area, as well as outside of the dock doors.
  • Controls parking area outside of “main shipping doors” to ensure safety and permit only authorized personnel are parked in these areas.
  • Ensures only authorized personnel access equipment within the Shipping Dock area.
  • Verifies authorized individuals and controls access.
  • Arranges for courier services; logs incoming/outgoing packages.
  • Monitors shipping dock and parking spaces to control access.
  • Assumes the duties of the Receiver as required.

What are we looking for?

  • Well developed customer service skills.
  • Directly related experience and advanced knowledge of security practices and procedures.
  • Well developed verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Genetic/control room system experience is an asset/preferred
