HOURS OF WORK:

The stated hours of work are approximate as schedules are subject to change with the operational needs of the Health Centre. Changes made to hours of work will follow the terms of the applicable collective agreement, company policy and/or legislation.

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

Responsible to the Senior Technician, Senior Technologist(s), Charge(s), and Medical Technologists in the Area(s) in which they are working and to the Laboratory Manager(s) for

performing phlebotomy and ECG tracings, as well as, preparing and organizing specimens for analysis and various duties in different areas of the laboratory.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING:

  • General Minimum Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Graduate of Medical Laboratory Professionals’ Association of Ontario (MLPAO) Certified Laboratory Assistant Course or equivalent
  • Previous recent venipuncture experience essential
  • Previous recent ECG experience preferred

Core

  • Previous Biochemistry/ Hematology/ Transfusion Medicine experience preferred
  • Current MLPAO certification or equivalent required
  • Demonstrated ongoing continuing education for the area preferred

Microbiology

  • Previous Microbiology experience preferred
  • Current MLPAO certification preferred or equivalent required
  • Demonstrated ongoing continuing education for the area preferred

WHO YOU ARE:

  • Good critical thinking skills required
  • Energic, ambitious, forward thinking and highly self-motivated
  • Demonstrated ability to deal effectively and co-operatively with all levels of staff, patients, physicians, external regulatory bodies and the public
  • Must have good team work skills and promote a positive attitude within the team.
  • Superior knowledge of medical terminology
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Computer skills are essential – keyboarding/ typing and knowledge of EPIC and Microsoft programs such as Outlook, Word and Excel
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills are important for interaction with patients and staff
  • Demonstrated organizational and time management skills are required to multi-task and prioritize workload
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a professional manner under stressful conditions
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to a constantly changing environment and hours of work to meet patient needs
  • Demonstrated ability to make decisions and use good judgement
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team member
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain attendance
  • Demonstrate an attitude of caring and empathy towards patients
  • Good mathematical skills required to perform inventory and read measurements of temperature, graduated containers and other equipment
  • Must be flexible in relation to shift work hours, duties performed, and work assignment
  • Possess good concentration skills
  • This position involves sitting or standing or walking for extended periods of times
  • Demonstrated ability to keep up to date technically and apply that knowledge to the position
