Early Career Fellowships on A Sustainable and Resilient Built Environment Research Agenda Department/College: Civil and Environmental Engineering / Engineering, Design and Physical Sciences Location: Brunel University of London, Uxbridge Campus Placement: Fixed term (12 months), Full–time, up to £40,757 per annum Brunel University of London was established in 1966 and is a leading multidisciplinary research-intensive technology university delivering economic, social and cultural benefits. The University has been awarded a grant by the British Council through the International Science Partnerships Fund, provided by UK Department of Science, Innovation and Technology, to appoint early career fellows, from 6 and up to 12 months, to collaborate internationally and gain access to new research environments, knowledge, and expertise, to enhance the quality of their research.

Fellows Must

  • Be a permanent resident in Jordan;
  • Be an Early Career Researcher;
  • Not currently in receipt of financial support or funding towards any other programme in the UK from any other sources;
  • Meet the English language requirement of the UK HEI;
  • Have a background or a proven interest in AI foundations and its application in civil and environmental engineering, including machine learning, sustainable construction, climate adaptation, and intelligent tools. Demonstrate future contributions to capacity-building and socio-economic advancement after completing the programme;
  • Agree to maintain contact with the British Council for purposes of monitoring and evaluation during and after the fellowship;
  • Not be an employee of the British Council, the UK government or Scottish, Welsh, or Northern Irish governments.

Please note that ECRs need to have completed or be close to completion of their PhD, waiting for their final viva examination, which must be passed prior to taking up the award. ECRs must not have held a permanent academic post or a permanent post with a research-related element, or one which allowed them to supervise PhD students or submit research grants as a PI. Time spent in teaching or academic roles does not affect ECR status, provided no research element was part of the role. If a researcher does not hold a PhD but has research experience equivalent to a PhD holder, they can still be considered eligible. Participants from for-profit organisations cannot be funded.

Besides the application form, you need to upload: (1) your CV; (2) a two-page maximum cover letter explaining you meet eligibility and desirable criteria; (3) a case of support for the fellowship (up to four pages) including (a) a description of your recent work and any planned research outputs; (b) the research work you will conduct in your fellowship aligned with sustainable and resilient built environment research agenda; (c) how this fellowship will help in the capacity-building and socio-economic advancement of Jordan.

The Fellowship Provides

  • Up to £40,757 per annum (pro rata for shorter fellowships).
  • Up to £10,000 per annum (on pro rata basis) for research-related expenses; including allowable costs, such as: IELTS exam, return economy airfare, visa costs; other ad hoc costs (extra baggage, etc) if applicable.
