About the role

The Conference Board of Canada (CBoC) is the nation’s largest independent applied research organization offering unbiased, evidence-based information and analysis to both industry, NGOs and federal/provincial governments. We have one of the country’s largest private economic analysis and forecasting teams and are widely recognized for expert economic forecasting, modeling, and leading analysis. CBoC undertakes research to address the most pressing issues in Innovation and Technology, Human Capital, Sustainability, Immigration, Indigenous and Northern Communities, Education and Skills, and Health. Our social science research provides actionable pathways to solutions. Simply put, we deliver insights that help Canada’s leaders cut through the noise and make informed decisions.

We are seeking a skilled DevOps Engineer to join our Economic Forecasting team.

Our Ideal Candidate is… a DevOps engineer with 3 to 6 year’s experience and a relevant degree (computer science or similar). Working as part of our Big Data analytics team specializing in Natural Language Processing, the ideal candidate will be responsible for maintaining cloud infrastructure, automating deployment processes, and ensuring robust, secure systems that support our data analytics operations.

We are a virtual organization and as a remote worker you must be comfortable and able to work 100 per cent of the time from a home office in Canada , with the exception of the requirement to travel to attend team meetings and events hosted by CBoC. To be successful as a remote worker you need to have a self-starter attitude, possess strong organizational and time management skills and be a proactive communicator. Having a home office environment that provides for a productive, professional, and safe work environment during regular working/business hours is a requirement of this role. This includes internet service and a reliable connection.

About The Role Key Responsibilities

Infrastructure Management

  • Launch, maintain, and troubleshoot Ubuntu Linux servers with Nginx web server across AWS and Ionos cloud environments
  • Diagnose and optimize server performance to ensure maximum efficiency
  • Create and update standard Linux server images for consistent deployments
  • Set up and optimize regular server backup systems

Automation & Development

  • Develop and deploy server automation tools to streamline operations
  • Build and implement new development tools and infrastructure focused on cloud technologies
  • Work on automating and improving software development and release processes
  • Test and examine code written by team members, analyzing results for quality assurance

Security & Collaboration

  • Ensure systems are safe and secure against cybersecurity threats and vulnerabilities
  • Identify technical problems and develop software updates and fixes
  • Collaborate with software developers and engineers to ensure development follows established processes and works as intended
  • Commitment to producing high quality work and demonstrating professional values in all aspects of work and interactions with colleagues and customers.

About You Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Relevant post-secondary degree (Bachelor of Computer Science, Engineering, or related) or an equivalent combination of experience and education
  • 3 to 6 years experience in a DevOps role, including 3+ years experience with a cloud-based Linux environment.
  • Strong knowledge and experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS), including Elastic Container Registry, EC2, SES
  • Proficiency in building and deploying Docker containers in a Linux environment
  • Setup and administration of Linux servers (Ubuntu preferred), preferably in a big data analytics environment
  • Experience configuring and administering web servers in a Linux environment, including Nginx
  • Proficiency in scripting and programming languages, including Python
  • Familiarity with relational databases, preferably MySQL, including knowledge of SQL
  • Experience with GitLab, including setting up and running CI/CD pipelines (GitHub experience will be considered)
  • Demonstrated experience with automating development workflow pipelines (CI/CD)
  • Strong oral and written communication skills combined with strong interpersonal skills.

  • Availability to work outside of regular hours/occasional weekends is required.

  • Web scraping tools, including proxy services and strong knowledge of the HTTP protocol

The hiring zone for this position is $96,900 - $114,000 annually for candidates from any Canadian province or territory. Salaries are based upon candidate experience, qualifications, specific skillsets, as well as market and business considerations. The full compensation band for this position ranges from $96,900 - $131,100. The recruiter can share more information about compensation for the position during the hiring process.
