About the role

Position Overview

The Communications Specialist supports NAT’s internal and external communications across digital and print platforms. This role involves content creation, campaign planning, stakeholder engagement, and communications analysis. Working closely with the MarCom team, the Communications Specialist helps ensure consistent, timely, and effective messaging that aligns with NAT’s mission and programs.

Key Responsibilities

Content Creation & Distribution

  • Draft and edit written content including newsletters, blog posts, press releases, and event summaries
  • Maintain consistency in voice and messaging across all communications
  • Prepare written materials for community updates, announcements, and stakeholder outreach
  • Support internal documentation and onboarding content where needed

Social Media & Campaign Management

  • Create posts for platforms such as LinkedIn, Instagram, X (Twitter), and Facebook
  • Collaborate with the Marketing Lead to execute social campaigns around events, recruitment, and major announcements
  • Monitor channels for comments, questions, and trends; engage with the community and respond appropriately
  • Maintain an organized content calendar with platform-specific strategy

Strategy & Analytics

  • Track and report performance metrics for communication efforts (e.g., engagement, reach, audience growth)
  • Analyze campaign results and provide recommendations for improvements
  • Contribute to strategic planning for digital growth and audience engagement
  • Assist in defining KPIs for content initiatives and documenting outcomes

Stakeholder & Community Relations

  • Coordinate communications with partners, sponsors, and external collaborators
  • Draft email updates for Problem Providers, speakers, and judges during major programs
  • Support outreach to academic and industry audiences to build awareness of NAT’s work
  • Represent NAT in relevant digital communities, sharing resources and updates

Internal Communications Support

  • Help ensure alignment of messaging between programs, teams, and public materials
  • Maintain a shared library of communication assets and templates
  • Assist with onboarding content for staff and volunteers supporting external-facing roles

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong written and verbal communication
  • Familiarity with social media platforms and audience engagement
  • Attention to tone, clarity, and consistency in writing
  • Basic understanding of analytics tools and content performance tracking
  • Comfortable collaborating across teams and receiving feedback

Tools and Technologies

  • Social Media Management: Meta Business Suite, Later
  • Communication Tools: Gmail, Slack, Google Meet
  • Analytics: Instagram Insights, LinkedIn Analytics, Mailchimp
  • Content Creation: Canva, Google Docs, Google Sheets
  • Project Management: ClickUp

Qualifications

Required

  • Proven experience writing for public audiences across multiple formats
  • Familiarity with social media platforms and digital content scheduling
  • Ability to meet deadlines, follow brand guidelines, and collaborate with a team

Preferred

  • Prior experience in nonprofit, education, or event-based communications
  • Knowledge of accessibility in digital communications
  • Basic experience with analytics dashboards or reporting tools

Working Conditions

This is a hybrid position based in Edmonton, Alberta, requiring in-person work 2–3 days per week and full on-site presence during key program dates. Some evening or weekend work may be required during live events. The Communications Specialist will support clear, timely communication across platforms and help strengthen NAT’s relationships with its community and partners.

  • Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person with refugee protection status
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number and be legally entitled to work in Canada
