About the Position:

Under the direction of the Facilities Supervisor, the Housekeeper is responsible to maintain a safe, clean and comforting environment for patients, families and staff within the facility. This role involves hands-on cleaning duties, requiring attention to detail and strong organizational skills.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversee the cleanliness and sanitation of patient rooms, restrooms, common areas, hallways, staff facilities, and other spaces according to hospice protocol and infection control standards.
  • Perform thorough cleaning tasks, including vacuuming, sweeping, mopping, and sanitizing all designated areas.
  • Deep cleaning and sanitizing of patient rooms as they become empty.
  • Clean the bathrooms, including sinks, toilets, showers, commodes and garbage.
  • Clean walls, windows and dusting.
  • Collect garbage, recycling and compost, disposing of waste in a responsible manner.
  • Complete assigned scheduled cleaning and maintain accurate logs of completed tasks.
  • Report any maintenance issues or damages to the Facilities Supervisor promptly.
  • Maintain a friendly and professional demeanor when interacting with patients, visitors, colleagues and volunteers.
  • Replenish supplies such as soap, paper towel, toilet tissue in all bathrooms.
  • Ensure proper use and maintenance of cleaning equipment and supplies.
  • Restock housekeeping cart for the next shift.
  • Prepare cleaning products by following proper procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned for effective operation of the Hospice.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 1 year of housekeeping experience.
  • Prior experience in a healthcare or hospice setting is strongly preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to maintain high cleanliness standards.
  • Knowledge of infection control practices and safety procedures.
  • Desire to ensure a welcoming, clean and safe environment for everyone.
  • Strong communication skills to effectively interact with residents, guests, and team members.
  • Ability to work independently with a minimum of supervision.
  • Organized, flexible and capable of operating related equipment.
  • Must be able to follow written or oral instructions.

  • Respect privacy, cultural preferences, and the emotional atmosphere present in end-of-life care.
  • Accommodates any reasonable request involving housekeeping.
  • Maintains positive interactions by building a welcoming, helpful environment.
  • Supports Hospice initiatives and positively represents Hospice to the community.
  • Abides by all Hospice policies regarding confidentiality, privacy, and professional conduct.

Working Conditions:

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds.
  • Must be able to use cleaning equipment, chemicals and tools safely and effectively.
  • Properly use PPE to mitigate risk of exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids.

Compensation and Benefits:

About Hospice Halifax

Every year hospice Halifax welcomes about 150 patients whose palliative care needs can't be met at home but who don't need care in a hospital. Patients receive professional nursing care with physician support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Patients and families can access on-site programs, bereavement counselling , and social work consultation.
