Who We Are:
Based in Stratford, Ontario, the Stratford Festival is one of the world’s foremost repertory theatre companies. It operates year-round, presenting a season of about a dozen plays each year between the months of April and November, a rich stream of digital content and hundreds of events designed to deepen understanding of the plays. For every person a theatregoer sees on our stages, we have seven people working behind the scenes, some of the world’s most dedicated and experienced arts workers.

The Baker is responsible for the baked goods production, sanitation, and organization associated with its designated station. (I.e. Greenroom Kitchen, Café Kitchen, Marquee Kitchen). The Baker will prepare food items for the Staff Greenroom, Festival Theatre Café, Internal and External Catering Events. The Baker works in collaboration with the Executive Chef and Sous Chefs to achieve high standards, effective production and ensure food costs are in line with the department’s budget.
Responsibilities:
- Daily Activities
- Prepare and bake a variety of baked goods.
- Follow recipes and formulas accurately for consistency and quality.
- Measure and mix ingredients according to recipes using mixers, blenders, heat sources, and other bakery equipment.
- Shape, roll, and cut dough to prepare for baking.
- Rotate ingredients and baked items to minimize waste and maintain freshness.
- Inspect finished products for uniformity, texture, and appearance.
- Ensure products are labeled and displayed attractively, where applicable.
- Clean and shut down equipment at the appropriate time.
- Support the Department
- Monitor stock levels of ingredients and supplies, report shortages to supervisor.
- Monitor catering clipboards; being aware of upcoming events
- Receive, inspect, and store deliveries in accordance with food safety standards.
- Organize storage areas and assisting with inventory counting as needed
- Operate bakery equipment such as ovens, mixers, induction stoves, and scales.
- Clean and maintain equipment regularly, reporting any malfunctions or maintenance needs.
- Communicate effectively with team members regarding inventory, workflow, or customer requests
- General
- Maintain a safe and sanitary work environment, cleaning the kitchen throughout the shift, and replenishing stock as necessary.
- Follow all organizational and governmental health/safety standards at all times
- Maintain a clean and tidy appearance at all times, adhering to established uniform standards
- Adhere to the Stratford Festival Health & Safety Commitment and Procedures, and ensure that safe work practices and policies are supported and enforced within reporting structure.
- Perform other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
- Post-secondary diploma program, typically a two year program, or equivalent, (i.e. Community college, Technical Institute or Trade School, etc.) in pastry arts is an asset.
- 1 to 2 years of related experience
- Valid Drivers license is required
- Ability to understand and follow directions from others
- Flexible availability to work a variety of operating hours
- Proficiency in English: verbal and written communication
- Any other culinary related diplomas or certificates considered an asset
