The Applied Research Assistant in the Division Monitoring unit supports the Edmonton Catholic School Division by conducting, collecting, and analyzing data as well as by ensuring data integrity. This role involves assisting in the development of data collection instruments, preparing reports, and maintaining accurate databases. By assisting in the development and analysis of data to monitor performance, the Applied Research Assistant contributes to the Division's strategic planning and decision-making processes.
Job Responsibilities
Conduct Research and Data Collection (30%)
- Conduct literature searches and gather relevant data from various sources.
- Assist in the development and implementation of data collection instruments such as surveys and tests.
- Prepare and distribute data collection tools and monitor the receipt of responses.
- Organize and prepare collected data for analysis.
- Ensure the integrity and accuracy of collected data.
Maintain Data Management Systems (30%)
- Conduct data validation to locate and eliminate errors.
- Digitize completed data collection instruments.
- Create and maintain valid databases and reports.
- Validate databases for applied research projects.
- Ensure the accuracy of Division and school-level dashboards.
Analyze and Report Data (20%)
- Validate data by cross-referencing with original sources.
- Analyze quantitative and qualitative data using statistical methods.
- Assemble and interpret data for use in reports, projects, and presentations.
- Update and maintain current and longitudinal data reports.
- Draft documents and reports in response to queries or reporting needs.
Participate in Professional Development (10%)
- Maintain and upgrade knowledge through professional development activities.
- Identify staff development needs and recommend them to the Director.
- Review best practices and make recommendations for improvements.
Participate in Program Unit Activities (10%)
- Participate in unit meetings and activities and contribute to strategic planning.
- Assist unit staff during peak workloads and provide cover-off during absences.
- Collaborate on projects and initiatives and review best practices to enhance work efficiency and accuracy.
- Contribute to the development of new procedures.
Qualifications
Degree or diploma in an area related to Business, Sciences, Arts, Education, or equivalent, with coursework in computing and statistics.
Knowledge, Skills and Competencies
Knowledge:
- Knowledge of information governance, records management, and privacy legislation (Alberta Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, Alberta Protection of Privacy Act, Alberta Access to Information Act).
- Knowledge of the Alberta Student Record Regulation and the Alberta Education Act.
- Practical understanding of data analysis, both quantitative and qualitative analysis.
- Understanding of reporting databases and Microsoft programs.
- Understanding of digital student records systems (PASI and PowerSchool).
- Awareness of workplace safety and Occupational Health and Safety regulations.
- General knowledge of Division operations, goals, and objectives.
Skills:
- Strong organizational and time management skills to balance competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Attention to detail and the ability to work with a high degree of precision.
- Ability to respond accurately and timely to privacy and access related questions and maintain confidentiality.
- Strong evaluation, analysis, and research skills.
