Fundraising Expertise Needed
The Toronto Local Charity (TLC) empowers young people to break the cycle of poverty by providing life skills training, mental health and wellness programs, leadership training, and enhanced access to technology. Our programs support young people to build a life where they live in dignity, enhancing their resilience and security while providing greater opportunities for employment and future leadership.
TLC is experiencing significant growth, and we are actively seeking a General Director with strong fundraising expertise to join our Board of Directors by July 31, 2025.
Why We Need You
Our Key Challenge: As a growing organization making real impact in youth development, TLC needs to secure stable, diversified funding to expand our reach and deepen our impact. We are specifically seeking a Board member who can lead and enhance our fundraising capabilities.
Position Overview
The General Director serves as a Board member responsible for overall management oversight and strategic planning for TLC. Working collaboratively with the Executive Director, you'll provide fiduciary oversight and accountability for achieving our mission and vision.
Primary Focus: We are particularly seeking someone who can provide strategic leadership in fundraising, including planning, identifying funding sources, and implementing successful fundraising methodologies.
Key ResponsibilitiesFundraising Leadership (Primary Focus)
• Lead fundraising strategy development and implementation • Identify and cultivate funding sources across individual donors, corporate sponsors, foundations, and government grants • Guide the fundraising process and cycle from prospect identification to stewardship • Share successful fundraising methodologies and best practices • Leverage personal and professional networks for fundraising opportunities • Support and mentor staff and volunteers in fundraising activities
Governance & Strategic Oversight
• Help set TLC's strategic direction: Mission, Vision, Values • Monitor organizational performance against strategic goals and objectives • Review and assess financial information to ensure fiscal responsibility • Assess and mitigate organizational risks • Ensure all activities are legal and in the organization's best interests • Expand stakeholder and partnership networks for collaboration and impact
What We're Looking ForEssential Qualifications
• Proven fundraising experience with demonstrated success in securing funding from multiple sources • Strategic thinking ability to contribute to long-term organizational planning • Strong networks in business and community circles • Nonprofit governance experience or willingness to learn quickly • Commitment to youth development and breaking cycles of poverty
Highly Valued Experience
• Grant writing and foundation relations • Major donor cultivation and stewardship • Corporate partnership development • Fundraising campaign management • Youth support programs or lived experience with poverty/youth development • Financial oversight and risk management
Board Expectations
Commitment Level: This is a hands-on board role, particularly in fundraising initiatives.
• Meetings: Every 8 weeks initially, transitioning to quarterly as we establish strong foundations • Active participation in sub-committee work, especially fundraising committee • Timely communication via email and Slack between meetings • Personal commitment to TLC's mission and values • Financial stewardship including direct involvement in fundraising efforts • Transparency in disclosing any conflicts of interest
Term: 2.5 years | Reports to: Board of Directors
