The semi-skilled Operations Maintenance Worker provides laboring duties, in support of semi-skilled and skilled workers. An incumbent may be assigned to work in any different work areas/sections. The majority of work involves physical effort and agility. The incumbent exercise some independent of action and judgment in day-to-day functions and refers unusual problems or policy matters to their supervisor. This position operates under the direction of a supervisor who checks work upon completion for quality and adherence to established work standards. Instruction is given through oral and written means.
Some of the key responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:

Performs a diverse range of duties, including but not limited to monitoring, repair and replacement of infrastructure, such as shoveling, raking, screeding concrete, painting, vegetation control, construction of head walls, cleaning signs and removing graffiti.

Assists in the maintenance, repair and operation of water, sewer and drainage infrastructure; participates in the cleaning, repair and installation of sewer and drainage mains and services and in pump station maintenance, flushing mains and repairing hydrants.

Assists in pipe-laying including caulking and wet tapping tasks, timber work, setting forms, mixing, placing and finishing concrete, asphalt placing, line painting or equivalent tasks.

Ensures compliance with safety in the workplace; follows safe operating guidelines and WorkSafeBC regulations.

Performs routine servicing of equipment, such as lubricating, cleaning, and checking for loose or worn parts.
-
Operates weed eaters, chainsaws and other electrical and gas power tools.
-
Performs litter and garbage collection within parking areas, boulevards, bridges, pedestrian routes and other areas as assigned.

Operates class 5 vehicles and a range of other light duty equipment and/or fleet vehicles as required
The successful candidate for this position will have:
-
Completion of Grade 12, supplemented by some related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience

Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia – Class 5
-
Sound knowledge of the standard practices, methods, materials and tools used in civil construction and/or public works related municipal maintenance work
-
Ability to deal tactfully with the public, contractors and coworkers
-
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and maintain records as required
-
Ability to safely operate light duty equipment and tools used in work performed relating to civil construction and municipal maintenance operations
