Job Title: Peer Support Worker
Program: Harm Reduction-South Okanagan+ Lived Experience Circle
Location: Princeton
Hours: Casual/ usually 3 hours a week
Job Summary
As part of the Harm Reduction Program, the Peer Support Worker plays a key role in ensuring that OneSky and community partners offer safe, welcoming, inclusive, and friendly environments for People Who Use Drugs, by offering engagement in the Lived Experience Circle meetings and projects. They also provide education about harm reduction, overdose prevention and response, take home naloxone training, and safe disposal of sharps. Peers also facilitate outreach and connections to create positive outcomes within the community.
Key Responsibilities

Works collaboratively with team members to support quality services for People Who Use Drugs by brainstorming and contributing to problem solving in the areas of training, public education, harm reduction services, overdose responses and advocacy.

Assists with harm reduction activities, such as preparing harm reduction kits and educating People Who Use Drugs on harm reduction practices.

Maintains professionalism and act as good ambassadors- respectful communication skills, listening skills, appropriate dress, timely communication about absences etc.

Participates and informs community partnerships so the experiences of People Who Use Drugs are reflected in solutions and decision-making.

Provides support to People Who Use Drugs and assists in sharing information on local services.

Assists with public awareness events and special workshops.

Follows safety procedures at work settings and personal responsibilities within safety plans.

Attends and participates in staff meetings and training as required.

Completes and maintains related records and documentation.

Maintains confidentiality of shared information, and maintains relationships of trust and cooperation with participants and peers by providing a respectful environment that values their choices and abilities.
Qualifications

Strong knowledge of applied harm reduction practices, particularly as relevant to people who use drugs.

Personal or Lived Experience in Drug Use is an asset.

Ability to work independently and in cooperation with others.

Ability to maintain supportive, collaborative relationships with other members of the Lived Experience Circle and to listen to different opinions.

Committed to being a community ambassador and interacting positively with public.

Knowledge of local social and health services available to people who use drugs.

Willing to travel and work in various locations across Penticton based on identified service needs.
