About the role
Cook (Casual)
Reporting to the Manager of Food & Beverage at our Tiffany Village and Kenny’s Pond locations (multisite), the incumbent is responsible for the preparation, cooking and delivery of a high-quality product/service to the residents and their families, guests, visitors and staff.
Key Responsibilities/Duties:
- Fulfills the duties and responsibilities of a cook with a pleasant demeanour focusing on upholding excellent customer service, recognizing the importance of maintaining these ongoing relationships with all our clients, inclusive of residents, families, guests, volunteers, and staff.
- Prepares food, which provides high quality nutritional value, flavor, color, texture, and appearance following standardized recipes.
- Ensures that daily food is prepared, cooked, and served to a high standard in a timely, safe and consistent manner.
- Serves meals to residents and guests in all dining rooms throughout the facility.
- Confirms all residents’ requirements (special meals) are accurate daily.
- Accurately follows nutritional/dietary restrictions (inclusive of portion monitoring), recipe formulas and weighing ingredients.
- Daily cleaning of kitchen machinery, equipment, storage, and preparation areas; general maintenance of equipment and inventory control.
- Ensures all kitchen equipment is fully functional and all equipment/supply areas are used, cleaned, maintained, and stored in a safe, clean, and efficient manner.
- Reports unsafe or faulty equipment to Manager.
- Confirms and signs off that proper lock up procedures are followed and recorded for all equipment.
- Assists in record keeping for resident accounts, catering, and shortages on product.
- Completes all line records on a daily basis.
- Assists in all areas of the kitchen.
- Adheres to government guidelines for proper and safe food handling and beverage service.
- Complies with all provincial regulations governing food and beverage services and established departmental/organizational policies and procedures.
- Demonstrates initiative to meet resident needs consistent with the resident-focused care approach by:
- Participating in establishing and maintaining a home-like environment including the dining experience; and
- Demonstrating the ability to respond positively and effectively to last minute changes that may occur.
- Assists in providing direction, guidance, and instruction (orientation & training) to fellow Cooks, Food & Beverage Associates, and Bakers as necessary.
- Instruct food & beverage staff re: requirements for special functions, banquets, and catering functions. From time to time, may be required to assist with setup, break down, and clean up involved in such functions.
- Fosters an environment of engagement, encouragement, and safeguard to ensure residents’ well-being is maintained, particularly for those seniors who are vulnerable and require guidance/support.
- Observes and reports any changes in residents’ behavior to immediate supervisor and Resident Care Manager or designate, as deemed appropriate.
- Ensures written documentation and verbal reports are maintained as per Company policy and procedures with respect to confidentiality and security.
- From time to time, may be required to assist and work collaboratively with the team as a server, as well as in the servery, dish room, soups and salads, and food preparation to meet the needs of the residents.
- From time to time, may be required to assist with cleaning/scrubbing of chairs on a daily basis.
- Performs other related/assigned duties as required to meet the needs of residents.
Qualifications:
Abilities and Skills:
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills in working with residents, families, the TVRRP team, as well as the general public.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills with demonstrated ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrated proficiency in the ability to treat residents with respect, dignity, and care.
- Demonstrated proficiency in ability to resolve contentious or sensitive issues, or situations requiring conflict resolution.
- Demonstrates a strong desire to serve and care for seniors.
- Resident-centered approach to service, as well as an awareness of the potential for cognitive changes to occur.
- Professional, open, friendly, autonomous, team player, responsive and positive.
- Able to apply tact, discretion, and sound judgement.
- Trustworthy, reliable, dependable.
- Shows initiative and commitment to service excellence.
- Ability to meet the physical requirements of the position.

Experience, Training/Education and Work Record:
- High school diploma.
- Red Seal Certification and/or graduation from a Commercial Cooking or Culinary Arts Program from a recognized college or institution and/or a 1-(One) Year Certificate in Commercial Cooking or equivalent combination of culinary experience and/or training.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of quantity food production and possesses 1-3 years’ experience in quantity food production.
- Previous experience working as a Cook in the field of seniors’ living/care is preferred.
- Successfully meets the necessary employee requirements as stipulated in the operational standards by the Department of Health & Community Services governing agencies with home support licenses.
- Current First Aid and CPR certification.
- Knowledge of WHMIS and the importance of complying with same.
- Knowledgeable of the importance of and ability to comply with Safe Food Handling Practices, Safe Work Practices, National Sanitation Code, and Texture and Therapeutic Standards/Guidelines.
- Knowledge of Canada’s Food Guide.
- It’s Good Business Responsible Alcohol Service Certification would be considered an asset.
- A satisfactory record of work performance and attendance is required.
Hours of Work:
- Hours of work will vary from week to week in order to maintain a flexible environment to meet the needs of our residents.
- Hours will include daytime, evening, weekend, and holiday coverage, as required.
Rate of Pay:
- $19.72 per hour as per the current Collective Agreement
- An additional $1.00 per hour to be paid to those employees who have received certification as a Certified Red Seal Cook
Required Documentation Prior to Start:

- Minimum of three references
- Current First Aid & CPR
