About the role
The City of Surrey has launched an action plan to address the delivery of housing and support affordable housing projects that aim to increase new housing by 27.8% in our city. This action plan is supported by the $100 million Housing Accelerator Fund (HAF) that was awarded to the city by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). HAF will help improve the development approval process through an action plan designed to:
- Facilitate the delivery of housing in the short and long term
- Enhance the certainty in the permit approval process
- Increase access to affordable housing
- Continue to support the development of complete communities that are sustainable and inclusive
- Further position surrey as a destination for investment
- Help us deliver on Surrey’s action plan
Employment Status
Union – CUPE Local 402 – Project (2 Years)
Scope
The Planner 1, Housing & Social Development will be responsible for collaborating on the HAF projects related to non-market housing.
Responsibilities
- Facilitating new non-market housing projects
- Improving and expediting the City's approvals process for non-market housing projects
- Researching, reviewing and, where applicable
- Revising policies and regulations related to non-market housing projects, low-income renters and other special populations
- Updating the Housing Needs Report.
- Other job-related duties may be assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor degree in Planning or in a related discipline with supplementary courses recognized by the Canadian Institute of Planners as fulfilling the requirement for membership plus four years related experience OR
- Master’s Degree in Planning and two years related experience.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners is preferred.
- Valid B.C. Driver’s License with a safe driving record, if applicable.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
The successful candidate will have the following skills and attributes:
- Knowledge of land use planning and housing policy.
- Research and critical-thinking skills relating to policy work.
- Good verbal and written communication skills and teamwork skills.
- Aptitude for innovation and problem-solving.
- Interest in contributing to the community housing sector and creating homes for households struggling with homelessness and housing affordability.
