Job Description:

A Clinical Doctoral Scientist (Clinical Biochemist) is an individual who has undergone specialized training in a broad spectrum of health-related scientific domains that may include basic science, clinical science, quality improvement, critical appraisal, health professional education, and health system development and delivery. The Clinical Doctoral Scientists (Clinical Biochemists) represent a significant and important component of clinicians within the Provincial Program of Laboratory Medicine and are key leaders in Saskatchewan health care, collaborating with system leaders to achieve our province’s healthcare goals. Reporting to a Dyad Leadership team within Laboratory Medicine, the Scientist is responsible for providing consultation and liaison with physicians and other health care practitioners in the ordering and interpretation of specialty laboratory testing to ensure optimal patient care. The Scientist is a critical member of a team of laboratory clinicians in the Provincial Program of Laboratory Medicine, which combines academic, research and patient care mandates within the

Saskatchewan Health Authority and the College of Medicine, University of Saskatchewan, as it implements new and innovative was to integrate laboratory diagnostic practice in the province.

Minimum Education and Qualifications

  • PhD or equivalent in Biochemistry or a related field
  • Postdoctoral training in a CACB accredited Clinical Biochemistry program or an equivalent program recognized by CACB
  • Certification or eligible for certification by the CACB

Licenses

  • Valid Class 5 driver's license

Duties

  • Participate in the selection, validation, verification, and implementation of new analytical methods within SHA laboratories
  • Monitoring internal quality control results to detect and address deviations or trends
  • Review external quality assessment (EQA)/proficiency testing programs and other performance reports
  • Analyze quality metrics and prepare reports for SHA and accreditation bodies
  • Support test stewardship initiatives to ensure appropriate and effective laboratory testing
  • Promote continuous quality improvement initiatives to enhance laboratory efficiency and accuracy
  • Asist with laboratory oversight of point-care testing programs
  • Assist laboratory staff with specimen evaluation and provide technical troubleshooting as
  • needed
  • Review and sign out serum and urine protein electrophoresis, immunofixation
  • electrophoresis, cryotyping, and beta-2 transferrin assays
  • Provide consultation to healthcare providers regarding laboratory testing, including test selection, result interpretation, and approval of send-out test requests
  • Participate in on-call service rotations
  • Contribute to the education and training of residents, clinical chemistry fellows, medical students, and medical laboratory technologists within the SHA
