What Will You Do Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Director of Environment and Sustainability champions the integration of environmental stewardship and sustainability principles throughout Calgary Airports operational activities and long-term planning. This role involves developing and managing environmental management systems, leading sustainability programs, and building strong relationships with regulatory agencies, airlines, community groups, and other key stakeholders to ensure responsible and sustainable airport growth and operation.
Whats The Team Like The Environment Team drives the integration of sustainability and environmental responsibility across airport operations. They manage environmental systems, lead initiatives to reduce environmental impact, and collaborate with stakeholders to support safe, sustainable airport growth.
What Are Some Of The Responsibilities
- Provide oversight of the Calgary Airports environmental program development and advancement to ensure compliance and continuous improvement. This is accomplished through inspection, training, analysis, regulatory interpretation, organizational guidance, and implementation of best practice to mitigate risk.
- Implement and support environmental programs that align with operational efficiency goals and contribute to overall business success.
- Create and embed an environmental and sustainability vision and culture into all practices and programs at Calgary Airports.
- Create and embed a strong airport environmental and sustainability brand that highlights key initiatives and practices to increase airport and community engagement.
- Oversee the development of creative and innovative sustainability solutions to meet the needs of the business, tenant, airlines and other Calgary Airports stakeholders.
- Develop an approach to training and education of internal and external stakeholders that links to vision and strategy.
- Assess airport environmental needs, develop capital submission funding documents for required environmental studies and projects, tender and manage funded projects that relate to strategy and vision.
- Develop and manage an effective Environmental Management System based on environmental regulatory compliance, due diligence, and continuous improvement.
- Develop environmental policy and guidelines as well as environmental emergency contingency plans.
- Establish and maintain divisional policies and procedures.
- Ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
- Develop and manage the divisional budget.
- Monitor financial performance and implement corrective actions when necessary.
- Lead, mentor, coach and develop a high-performing team.
- Set performance goals, provide ongoing feedback, conduct regular evaluations and address performance needs within the Division.
- Foster a positive, collaborative and inclusive work environment.
What Do You Need To Bring
- The ability to obtain and maintain a RAIC (RAIC Program and Application Information)
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies, Environmental Science, or a closely related field is required. Equivalent combination of progressive experience and education may be considered.
- Minimum of 15 years of progressive experience in both environmental management and sustainability, or a closely related field, preferably within a complex industrial setting such as transportation, energy, or infrastructure. Experience within the aviation sector is a significant asset.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in a senior leadership role.
- Proven track record of successfully navigating and interpreting complex environmental regulations and legislation at the federal, provincial (Alberta), and potentially municipal levels, along with developing and implementing sustainability strategies aligned with business goals.
- Experience and technical knowledge in environmental areas such as noise management, air and water quality, wildlife, and vegetation management.
- Experience in developing and managing sustainability reporting frameworks (e.g., GRI, SASB) and communicating the organization"s environmental and sustainability performance to stakeholders.
- Knowledge of climate change impacts on airport infrastructure and operations, and experience in developing and implementing strategies for adaptation and mitigation (including emissions reduction targets).
- Strong leadership skills demonstrated through previous supervisory and people management experience.
- Superior interpersonal and communication skills to deal with a wide variety of stakeholders.
- Business-oriented mindset with strong judgment and strategic thinking.
- Ability to work and manage under pressure and respond to critical and/or changing priorities throughout the day.
- Financial acumen and budget management expertise.
- Ability to demonstrate tactfulness, collaborative nature, and professionalism.
- Must be able to meet and maintain the requirements of a Safety Sensitive position, this includes pre-employment medical assessment and Drug & Alcohol testing.
- Must be able to participate in the Airport Emergency Operations Centre (AEOC) on a rotational on-call basis, as well as respond to out of regular business hour emergencies as required.
