As a Thrift Shop Assistant Manager in our Thrift Shop, you provide people leadership, expertise and management support so that Thrift shoppers can find and purchase high quality treasures to support MCC’s world-changing initiatives.
JOB SUMMARY
Working in MCC BC’s Mission Thrift Shop, located in Mission, BC, and reporting to the Manager, Thrift Shop, the Thrift Shop Assistant Manager is responsible for providing day-to-day leadership and support for the daily operations of the thrift shop. From the warehouse to the retail floor, under the direction of the Manager, Thrift Shop and the Director, Social Enterprise, you are responsible for identifying and implementing activities at your thrift shop to meet its goals, plans and vision.
This role includes general shop leadership alongside and in relief of the Manager, Thrift Shop, employee and volunteer coordination and scheduling, hands-on retailing assistance, back-of-house and inventory supervision and support, shop communications, and workplace safety. You’ll work directly with customers, volunteers, employees, donors and members of the community in a manner that reflects Christian integrity, exemplifying the beliefs, values, and mission of Mennonite Central Committee British Columbia in the workplace.

This role requires adherence to MCC BC’s Code of Conduct, policies, practices, and procedures, including Workplace Health and Safety.
- How much you work: this is a full-time salaried position working 40 hours per week. Supporting special organizational initiatives may require working extended, after or holiday hours, as necessary.
- When you work: regular retail hours are 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday to Saturday. Work shifts will begin prior to or extend later than retail hours. This role may require extended, after or holiday hours to support shop needs, issues, or special organizational initiatives, as necessary.
- Where you work: this position is located at MCC BC’s Mission Thrift Shop in Mission, British Columbia. Support for the Shop’s pick-up and delivery service may require travel in an MCC BC or personal vehicle to locations across the greater Vancouver area. On occasion, training and meetings may require travel to other MCC BC locations within British Columbia.
- Pace of work: this position requires working in a comfortable but fast-paced retail shop/shipping & receiving environment. You may be met with multiple demands at once from customers, volunteers and employees; responding positively and adroitly throughout.
- Physical conditions and requirements: this position requires spending a significant portion of time on one’s feet, handling used goods, and lifting/moving heavy objects. It may also include up to 50% computer-monitor time.
- Interactions with vulnerable populations: as a busy retail location, and following MCC BC safety and de-escalation protocols, this position may require effective and intense interactions with drug-addicted and street-involved persons, or individuals who are members of vulnerable populations.

Three years of relevant Thrift and/or retail experience

Post-secondary studies in business management, or 1+ year experience in a supervisory, volunteer coordination or management role preferred

Knowledge of the second-hand merchandise market & basic ability to assess quality of clothing, housewares, and furniture is an asset

Current First Aid Training Certification (may be provided in first three months of employment)

Key Responsibilities
RETAIL OPERATIONS

Lead, monitor, support and participate in all aspects of shop operations, acting in relief of the Shop Manager when the Shop Manager is not present.

Oversee shop opening and closing procedures, as required.

Oversee, support and participate in service and assistance directly to customers and donors on the retail floor, during donations intake, and at check-out.

Oversee, support and participate in inventory receiving, pre-sorting, sorting, repair/preparation, and movement onto the retail floor or for appropriate disposal.

Maintain merchandise quality and price control, including researching competitive price points and developing and updating quality criteria, price lists, and merchandise rotation schedules.

Oversee, support and participate in inventory pick-up and delivery, as required.

Oversee, support and participate in inventory movement, stocking, placement, merchandising and maintenance, to achieve MCC BC standards of tidiness, organization and optimal sales impact.

Oversee, support and participate in check out services and processes, including customer service and assistance, cash handling, till systems, balancing, and error handing.

Monitor, intervene and resolve disruptive, intense or challenging customer and visitor interactions and loss prevention situations.

Assess, rectify and improve all aspects of shop cleanliness, tidiness and safety conditions and standards.
-
Maintain records of customer, employee, volunteer, visitor or property incident reports related to any aspect of shop operations, submitting to internal and external authorities as required.

Under the direction of the Shop Manager, support property and capital asset maintenance and upgrade activities.
EMPLOYEE & VOLUNTEER LEADERSHIP

Coordinate all aspects of shop volunteer operations for the store, including recruitment, training, scheduling and supervising of volunteers.

Support the Shop Manager in the development of shop vision, goals, values, expectations, standards, and processes.

Support all aspects of shop administration as directed by the Shop Manager, acting in relief of the Shop Manager as required.

As directed by the Shop Manager, maintain shop personnel, financial, and facility records, including data entry, reporting, approvals, and supporting activities, as required.

Under the direction of the Shop Manager, manage expenses and revenue-generating activities within approved budget.

Participate in shop, thrift network or MCC BC organizational meetings, projects and activities, as required.

Under the direction of the Shop Manager, develop, plan, and implement merchandising and marketing plans to increase sales, increase awareness, assist with recruiting, and positively stakeholder engagement.

Monitor, oversee, support and manage in online sales and social media accounts, as required.
