Tutoring Coordinator

BGC Big Brothers Big Sisters of Edmonton & Area is an organization that believes in the promise of all children. Our team works with community volunteers, partners and other supporters to create safe environments for children to be between school and home and to provide caring mentoring relationships for children and youth. Now, more than ever, the kids in our community need us and we are looking for great staff to join our team.

BGC Big Brothers Big Sisters is seeking individuals interested in the following position(s):

Competition Number: TC0724

Positions: One (1) Position

Status: Full-Time Position (37.5 hours per week)

Salary Range: $56,774-$62,668 annually

The key responsibilities of this position will include:

  • Designing and delivering engaging, age-appropriate programs and tutoring activities that support academic and developmental growth, with a focus on literacy, numeracy, and STEM.
  • Focusing on supporting academic success and on enhancing children and youth interests in furthering their education and increasing their knowledge and opportunities to be successful academically.
  • Providing direct supervision, coaching, and practical support to volunteer tutors in the planning and delivery of one-on-one and small group tutoring sessions in a club setting.
  • Facilitating tutoring sessions as part of the tutoring team, when volunteer coverage is unavailable, or when specialized academic support is required.
  • Building and maintaining partnerships with agency departments, schools and other external agencies that offer continued academic support to address the needs of the children and youth.
  • Building relationships with school and club contacts, children and their caregivers to understand their needs and how best to assist them academically.
  • Maintaining and supplying tutoring classrooms/spaces at each club location, including ensuring the spaces adhere to workplace safety and health regulations and operating standards.
  • Supporting tutoring referrals from schools, agency clubs and families.
  • Maintaining accurate, up-to-date documentation and completing all required reports in a timely manner.

The successful candidate will have:

  • A University degree in education with 2 years of previous supervisory experience.

  • 5 years combined experience in a role involved in an education setting with children and youth. Familiar with school curriculum.

  • Demonstrated good communication skills (written and oral).

  • Ability to manage time with children effectively and be results oriented.

  • The ability to facilitate and engage groups of children.

  • Experience entering data into an electronic case management system and experience working with the MS suite of programs.

  • A valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle.

    • The ability to work 5 evenings up to 6:30 PM per week with a shift to daytime hours in the Spring/Summer to meet programming requirement.
    • A Police Information Check and Child Intervention Record Check no more than 6 months old are conditions of hire.

Candidates must be capable of performing independently as well as part of a team environment and have excellent interpersonal skills.
