About this position

The Flight Operations Engineer has overall responsibility for maintaining the technical requirements of Flight Operations.

Reporting to: Director, Flight Operations Support

  • Non-bargaining

Duties and Responsibilities:

Must be able to perform, but not be limited to, the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Ensuring that safety is the primary objective by adhering to the Canadian North safety policy and utilizing the appropriate safety reporting program in order to identify and communicate all known hazards and risks to the organization;
  • Ensuring continual improvement through the periodic review of documented processes;
  • Ensuring aircraft performance data and procedures are compliant with regulatory requirements, meet Canadian North's policies, and are consistent with aircraft certification;
  • Providing support to Operations Manager, Director, Flight Operations, Director, Flight Operations Support, Chief Pilots, Director, Operational Control Centre, and Manager, Flight Crew Training;
  • Developing and maintaining Performance, Weight & Balance, and MEL manuals and all related documentation in order to maintain currency and compliance with regulatory requirements (CARs and CASS);
  • Ensuring cruise profiles in flight planning system match actual aircraft performance;
  • Coordinating changes and additions to AeroData FPC Software and revising AeroData Performance Handbooks when required. Designing and modifying the graphical engine inoperative departure procedure charts;
  • Developing, implementing and enforcing of standards, policies and procedures pertaining to Aircraft Performance, Weight & Balance, and MEL;
  • Developing and analyzing aircraft performance data, procedures, and standards consistent with Company and regulatory requirements;
  • Performing technical reviews of airport analysis, aircraft engine inoperative procedures, and aircraft route analysis;
  • Developing existing tools and implements new technologies for the production and distribution of performance data to pilots;
  • Working closely with Flight Operations and Dispatch regarding aspects of performance relating to flight planning and the development and implementation of new operational performance techniques;
  • Contributing to the Flight Dispatcher and Pilot training programs through the preparation and delivery of technical presentations;
  • Interacting with various government and industry committees;
  • Providing guidance and direction in the management of fuel and raise awareness within Canadian North to enhance and promote fuel saving techniques;
  • Providing MEL support to Flight Operations and Line Maintenance;
  • Providing technical support to Flight Operations and investigate technical/operational issues;
  • Developing Noise Abatement Procedures;
  • Route analysis to optimize payload, fuel burn and operational efficiency. To evaluate route performance of potential new aircraft.
  • Managing all aspects of Weight and Balance issues, and design of trim sheets and providing guidance;
  • Monitoring fuel prices and implementing policies to optimize fuel costs. Cost Index management;
  • Monitoring fuel consumption, managing the Fuel Monitoring Program and developing optimized fuel policies;
  • Managing the gravel runway inspection program (CBR testing);
  • Testing of software provided by external vendors to ensure compliance with Canadian North technical requirements and adherence to aircraft performance and structural certification, prior to being used in the operational control of flights;
  • Assist Canadian North AEO in reviewing AFM supplements and with deriving technical requirements for new equipment designs or modifications;
  • Ensuring that accidents, incidents or hazards are reported appropriately and within a timely manner;
  • Assisting with safety investigations;
  • Conducting audits or assisting with audits;
  • Conducting risk assessments and root cause investigation;
  • Assisting in the development and monitoring of corrective action plans;
  • Conducting workplace inspection as required by the Safety Department; and
  • Other duties as assigned.
Skills and Qualifications:

Include, but not limited to, the following minimum skills and qualifications:

  • Degree in Aeronautical Engineering a definite asset;
  • Knowledge of aircraft systems;
  • Skills in standard office software (Word, Excel);
  • Experience managing complex projects and working under time constraints;
  • Able to effectively problem solve, take initiative and work as a member of a team;
  • Possess strong organizational, interpersonal & communication skills;
  • Working knowledge of Canadian Aviation Regulations as it applies to airline operations;
  • Working knowledge of MELs, weight and balance and aircraft performance;
  • Proven project management skills and abilities;
  • Superior organizational, interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Ability to work independently;
  • Ability to perform testing in the field and report results;
  • Ability to communicate in Inuktitut a definite asset; and
  • Ability to obtain and retain a Restricted Area Identity Card in accordance with the Airport Restricted Area Access Clearance Program regulated by Transport Canada.
