As a Medical Laboratory Technologist with VCH you will:
- Work in a team based environment and under general supervision of the Diagnostic Services Manager or other designated personnel.
- Perform a variety of routine and/or complex tests utilizing manual procedures and automated instruments within a designated laboratory area.
- Position is also responsible for functions such as greeting patients, collecting and/or receiving specimens, validating and reporting test results, maintaining instruments and preparing solutions and control agents in accordance with established procedures and safety standards.
- Participate in departmental training programs in chemistry, hematology and other related areas with a view to learning new/existing test and procedures for use in the Laboratory.
ABOUT BELLA BELLA, BC Bella Bella is a beautiful island community off the central coast of British Columbia, 690 km north of Vancouver. It is surrounded by a magical world of channels, inlets and old growth forest. It is home to salmon, orcas, humpbacks, bald eagles and the other denizens of the Pacific Northwest. The climate is mild and the area is a paradise for kayaking, sport fishing, hiking and photography. The Heiltsuk Hospital in Bella Bella has 7 acute beds, 7 long term care beds and a 4-bed emergency department open 24/7, along with Laboratory and Diagnostic Imaging services. It offers telehealth services as well as speciality clinics. Heiltsuk Hospital also has an Intensive Case Management team for mental health and substance use. There is a medical clinic and a pharmacy located in the hospital. The healthcare team consists of Physicians, RNs, LPNs, PCAs, Laboratory and Radiology Technologists, Combined Lab/X-Ray Technologists, Pharmacist, Pharmacy Assistants, and Support Services Personnel. Heiltsuk Hospital is located on the traditional territories of the Heiltsuk Nation. It is one of the only provincial hospitals located on a reserve in all of Canada.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Certified by the Canadian Society for Medical laboratory Science and basic care training.
Knowledge & Abilities
- Basic knowledge of knowledge of laboratory procedures and techniques including quality control.
- Basic knowledge of research process and methodology.
- Basic knowledge of other health care disciplines and their role in client care using point of care instrumentation.
- Demonstrated ability to function as a team member.
- Demonstrated ability to work under pressure in a constantly changing environment.
- Demonstrated ability to establish workload priorities in collaboration with others.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and in collaboration with others.
- General knowledge of Trauma Informed Practice and Harm Reduction approaches and Strengths-based care.
- Demonstrated ability to promote Indigenous Cultural Safety.
- Demonstrated ability to provide competent and culturally safe care in a variety of settings and with diverse populations.
- Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
- Skill in the operation of related equipment and in techniques appropriate to the designated area of the laboratory.

The hours of work including days off and work area may be subject to change consistent with operational requirements and the provision of the Collective Agreement and applicable statutes. Successful applicants may be required to complete a Criminal Records Review Check. As per Ministry of Health policy, all health care workers working in publicly-funded health care facilities are required to report their past receipt of certain vaccines or history of certain infections. Collecting these records will allow for offering of any missing vaccines, and for appropriate actions to be taken in the event of any future exposure to a communicable disease or during outbreaks.
