Introduction

Dr. Alex Miltsov, Department of Sociology at Bishop’s University, Quebec, invites candidates for a postdoctoral research position, who are applying for the 2025 Canada Postdoctoral Research Award (SSHRC) and/or for the Fonds de recherche du Québec Postdoctoral Fellowship (FRQ).

Project

The postdoctoral researcher will join the Worker Experiences in the Age of Generative AI: A Study of Cognitive Labour in Canada project led by Dr. Alex Miltsov in collaboration with Dr. Anabel Quan-Haase (Western University), Dr. Xavier St-Denis (INRS), and Dr. Kathrin Komp- Leukkunen (Lappeenranta University of Technology). The objective of the project is to understand the experiences of workers who face job loss due to the implementation of generative AI in their workplace. Namely, it aims to reveal why and how some workers are being replaced by generative AI, the decision-making processes senior managers use when choosing to substitute human labour with generative AI tools, and how job displacement affects individuals emotionally, financially, and professionally. Tasks

The postdoctoral researcher will develop a research program aligned with the objectives of the project. They will contribute to both qualitative and quantitative data collection, assist with data coding and analysis, and support knowledge mobilization activities.

Qualifications

We are seeking an emerging scholar with a sustained interest and demonstrated expertise in digital technology and labour studies. Applicants should hold a PhD in Sociology or a related discipline. They must have training in quantitative methods and be familiar with both qualitative and quantitative analyses. They should be an efficient research team member, who is also capable of undertaking independent empirical research.

Candidates must meet all eligibility requirements specified by SSHRC and/or FRQ.

Process

The application process consists of two stages:

Stage 1:

Candidates are invited to submit their initial applications to Dr. Alex Miltsov. The application should include the following documents:

  • Current CV

  • Letter of intent, which includes a research statement and confirms the candidate’s eligibility for a CPRA and/or FRQ scholarship

  • Two publications representative of the candidate’s research (dissertation chapter, peer- reviewed article, book chapter, etc.)

  • The names and contact of two referees

The documents should be submitted in one PDF file to amiltsov@ubishops.ca before 5:00 p.m. EST on August 5th.

Stage 2:

The selected candidate will submit their complete application to SSHRC by September 11****th and/or to FRQ by October 8****th.

Position

Only candidates who have been awarded the CPRA and/or FRQ scholarship are eligible for this position.

The expected start date is September 1, 2026, with a duration of two years.

This position will be governed by the policies of the respective funding organizations (SSHRC or FRQ) and Bishop’s University’s Postdoctoral Fellows Policy.
