Reports to: Coordinator, Employment Services

Employment Status: Full time temporary (12 months)

Bargaining Unit Status: Included

Hourly Wage/Annual Salary: $62,753.60 - $75,337.60

Language requirements: English is essential, French is essential

Schedule: Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week. Some evenings and weekends may be required.

About us:

Founded in 1960, the Youth Services Bureau of Ottawa (YSB) is one of the largest and most comprehensive non-profit agencies in Ottawa and a registered charity. It provides mental health services, employment programs, emergency shelter, community, health and housing services, and justice programs to youth in the Ottawa area, serving between 2,500 and 3,000 at‑risk individuals aged 12+ and their families every month. YSB employs 400 caring professionals in a unionized environment in over 21 locations across Ottawa.

Under the general direction of the Director of ES and the immediate supervision of the Coordinator, the Employment Counsellor is responsible for the provision of direct individualized services to clients of ES and programs within YSB in accordance with the policies and directives established by the Board. This includes supporting clients to identify and achieve appropriate short and long term goals and improve their employability through more rapid access to education, training and employment opportunities.

What you will do:

  • Provide a range of employment interventions including individual and group counselling, drop-in or outreach services and referrals to support clients in achieving their objectives.
  • Conduct needs assessment
  • Develop rationale for service plans
  • Assist clients to identify and achieve appropriate long and short-term goals (case management plans)
  • Support clients in their career planning, career counselling and coaching.
  • Assist clients with pre-employment preparation; resume preparation, job search skills and interview skills.
  • Ensure ongoing entry of case management information for program.
  • Ensure both electronic and physical files are maintained and current within established guidelines.
  • Ensure familiarity with pertinent legislation, regulations, guidelines and policies as well as community services.
  • Contribute to program and services development and evaluation.
  • Participate in hiring, training and supervision of students.
  • Follows safe work practices as established by the YSB and the Program.

This opportunity may be right for you if you have:

  • Degree or diploma in social sciences, educational counselling, social work
  • Two years related case management experience working with public in an employment setting
  • Knowledge of and experience using CAMS database
  • Strong capacity to organize, schedule and manage client work load
  • Experience in group facilitation
  • Current knowledge of Labour Market information and trends
  • Knowledge of Employment Ontario programs and services
  • Knowledge of job search strategies and techniques
  • Experience working with diverse client profile
  • Familiar with Ontario Works and Employment Insurance initiatives
  • Familiar with local employment, educational and training resources
  • Experience working in a recruitment or employment support agency considered an asset
  • Knowledge of/and or experience working with business community/ networking with employers or HR recruiters considered an asset
  • Knowledge of/ and or experience in the High-Tech sector considered an asset
  • Fluency in English is essential, French is essential

Additional Qualifications:

  • Access to vehicle and valid driver’s license
  • Successful applicants will be required to provide a clear Criminal Record Check, Vulnerable Sector Check or Broad Police check obtained within the past six (6) months, as a condition of employment with YSB.
  • To confirm language proficiency required for this position, successful candidates may be requested to undergo an oral and written assessment conducted by a third-party provider, arranged by YSB. Candidates must meet the minimum required linguistic profile before their employment start date. Formal education may be considered as sufficient demonstration of language proficiency, but is subject to review.
