About the role

Department Information

The mandate of the Department of Justice is to administer justice, including policing, community justice, victims services and corrections in the Northwest Territories. This mandate will be carried out in a manner which respects community and indigenous values and encourages communities to assume increasing responsibilities.

Job Information

As the Manager, Community Policing, reporting to the Director, Community Justice and Policing (CJ&P), you will work independently to provide expert advice and support on policing services and related issues in the Northwest Territories (NWT). You will support the Department of Justice (DOJ) and provide information and guidance to the Deputy Minister.

You will lead interdepartmental and inter-agency initiatives, serving as a key liaison for policing services delivered in partnership with Public Safety Canada and RCMP "G" Division. In this capacity, you will play an integral role in setting the strategic direction for policing in the NWT and in promoting effective community safety. Through a collaborative and coordinated approach, you will work to build trust and accountability in policing, strengthening relationships between communities, the RCMP, the DOJ, the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT), and federal partners.

You will promote and support policing approaches that are inclusive of community perspectives and respectful of local cultures, traditions, and languages. These approaches will also recognize and support the capacity of communities to address crime at the local level. In addition, you will serve as a point of contact for federal policing projects and programs delivered through Public Safety Canada and Indigenous Services Canada. Your work will reflect a deep understanding of cultural safety and the historical impacts of colonization and residential schools on the people of the Northwest Territories.

Key Qualifications:

  • Post-Secondary education in the field of Social Sciences, Criminology and a minimum of five years¿ experience in the community justice field, or nine years of directly related experience.
  • Previous experience working in or with policing at the community level in a northern environment.
  • Practical training in crime prevention, victim services, survivors of sexualized violence approaches and the principles of restorative justice.
  • Experience in program planning and policy development would be an asset.
