The mandate of the Department of Justice is to administer justice, including policing, community justice, victims services and corrections in the Northwest Territories. This mandate will be carried out in a manner which respects community and indigenous values and encourages communities to assume increasing responsibilities.
Job Information
As a Case Manager reporting to the Case Management Supervisor, you will provide case management services, guidance, and support to individuals in custody, while also supporting facilities and community reintegration efforts. You will supervise and develop staff and collaborate with supervisors and managers to uphold operational priorities.
In this role, you will promote the principles of restorative justice, safety, and reintegration through community development and partnerships, in alignment with the departmental guidelines of the Northwest Territories. As a designated Peace Officer, you will liaise with government and community agencies¿including correctional facilities, the Crown, RCMP, social services, and counselors¿to ensure the proper supervision of individuals in custody.
You will attend court as a subject matter expert and review legal documents to ensure the lawful detention of individuals. A strong theoretical understanding of human behavior and issues affecting persons in custody is essential. You must be able to assess and evaluate behavior, apply practical correctional techniques, and exercise sound judgment in areas such as the use of restraints, non-violent crisis intervention, and suicide prevention.
Additionally, you must be capable of interpreting legislation, policy, and court documents (e.g., warrants of committal, fine defaults, remand warrants). A solid understanding of correctional programming, policies, procedures, and security operations is required.
Key Qualifications:
- A Diploma in a Social Science related field combined with two (2) years current case management experience in the Corrections/Social Services field.
- Recent experience working with persons in custody in a case management capacity is required.
- A class 5 driver's license is required.
- Awareness of northern Aboriginal traditions and values would be an asset.
- Acceptable equivalencies would be a Degree in a Social Science related field.
