About the role

Job Summary:

The Recreational Therapist at “The Oz” Permanent Supportive Housing program is an integral member of a collaborative, interdisciplinary health team, responsible for developing and delivering therapeutic recreation services that support the holistic health and wellness of residents. Working with individuals who may be experiencing complex social, emotional, physical, and cognitive barriers, including those impacted by trauma, systemic marginalization, and chronic health conditions, the Recreational Therapist applies a trauma-informed approach that prioritizes safety, choice, collaboration, trust, and empowerment.

Through culturally responsive, client-centered programming, the therapist designs and facilitates meaningful, strengths-based, and inclusive activities that reflect the diverse identities, traditions, and lived experiences of the community. Programming is grounded in respect for cultural knowledge, personal autonomy, and the importance of community connection. Activities aim to improve residents’ quality of life, foster a sense of belonging, reduce isolation, and support physical, emotional, spiritual, and cognitive well-being.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Therapeutic Recreation or Recreation Therapy.
  • Registration (or eligibility) with the Nova Scotia Therapeutic Recreation Association (NSRTA) or a national equivalent.
  • Minimum 2-5 years of relevant experience working with individuals with complex needs.
  • Experience in a collaborative, community-based, or primary health care setting is considered an asset.
  • Experience designing and facilitating culturally responsive recreational and therapeutic programming for senior populations living with chronic health conditions.
  • Experience working with individuals facing social exclusion, poverty, homelessness, or mental health, and substance use concerns preferred.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed, harm reduction, and recovery-oriented practices.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation preferred.
