Patient Care Coordinator - Operating Room
About the role
DUTIES
Provides the day-to-day coordination, leadership and expertise for the overall organization and flow of patients through their perioperative journey. Is accountable for the efficient and effective organization of the OR unit and pre-operative care, working in cooperation with Team Leaders, staff and physician users. Is a key member of the OR adjudication team and is aware of patient flow and process throughout the scheduled day. Takes first line responsibility for patient focused care, working cooperatively with other units to ensure each patient´s planned surgical procedure is organized according to that patient´s best interest. Works with and through family members to minimize pre-operative anxiety and discomfort. Understands the overall demands of the daily operating room schedule and delegates to appropriate staff members in consent with Team Leaders.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Ensures patients scheduled for surgery (planned or unplanned) access resources effectively and efficiently based on the daily schedules.
- Minimizes surgical case delays and cancellations through pre planning, excellent communication and collaboration with the surgical/anesthesia and perioperative team.
- Promotes the provision of excellent patient care through interdisciplinary collaboration and consensus building, leads care in the pre-operative care unit.
- Liaises effectively with the Clinical Manager in Perioperative Services, Program Director(s), medical staff, professional and support staff to ensure the efficient and effective operation of the unit.
- Liaises with the resource leaders/delegates in both Day Surgery and PACU to ensure efficient flow and use of resources.
- Promotes the development and maintenance of patient/family focused care, taking direct responsibility for the effective coordination of their care processes. Communicates outcomes with family and collaborates with the volunteers accordingly.
- Creates an environment that maximizes participation in decision making within the team.
- Acts as a consultant and expert in coordinating daily patient care assignments.
- Attends, facilitates, and/or participates in unit and hospital-wide meetings/committees as invited (i.e. Perioperative Performance Council, Unit Based Council, daily Patient Flow meetings)
- Monitors resources and utilization in partnership with the Clinical Manager
- In collaboration with the Clinical Manager, provides coaching, mentoring, (in particular the orientation of RNs taking a charge position on shift) and monitors events related to staff, patients and family
- Responds to changes in the team, ensuring that adequate staff coverage is available across the teams including working in circulating and scrub role as needed in relief
- Facilitates a positive learning environment and acts as a resource for staff and health professional students
- Develops and maintains effective linkages with peer/team leaders, hospital departments and programs
- Participates in the development, implementation and review of hospital programs, policies and procedures as required
- Maintains current knowledge and ensures compliance with relevant legislation and hospital policies
- Advocates a safe environment for patients, visitors and staff
- Actively participates in and supports endeavors to enhance quality care
- Supports ongoing processes to maintain and enhance professional OR standards
- Performs other duties as requested and directed
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Evidence of certification with the College of Nurses of Ontario, in good standing
- Current OR experience required
- Previous or current OR leadership experience preferred.
- Demonstrated understanding and commitment to the mission and values of St. Joseph´s Hospital
- Demonstrated ability to lead, coordinate and collaborate in a complex, high intensity environment
- Exceptional project planning and excellent time management skills with the ability to complete objectives with assigned time frames
- Ability to anticipate and resolve problems in a collaborative and/or independent manner, as appropriate
- Excellent interpersonal communication and leadership skills
- Demonstrated ability to function as a team member and foster team principles and successfully work in a multidisciplinary team
- Effective change management skills with proven success in providing leadership in a multidisciplinary team environment

- Computer skills required, preferably MS Office
