Reporting to the Manager, Family Support Program, the Community Family Mediator is responsible for the effective functioning of the family mediation IA (Inuusirmut Aqqusiuqtiit) Program at the community level, to promote healthy family lifestyles by providing parenting programs and services. The incumbent will work closely with the Family Mediation Coordinator and the Rankin Inlet Community Mediator and, Manager, Family Support Program to refer clients who are experiencing domestic violence, depression, suicide and addictions. The incumbent may refer clients to other agencies and services where appropriate.

The Mediator will provide community based family services through Mediation and Counselling in such areas as custody, access, child support, parenting and other family related issues. These services will be offered on a bilingual Inuktitut/English basis. The Mediator will plan, organize and facilitate mediation sessions. Counselling will be provided on various family related issues that occur as a result of the breakdown of relationships and young parenthood. The successful candidate will also be assisting in the development and distribution of public legal information and assistance through community meetings, personal and family interviews. A detailed intake and case management system will be maintained through procedures established by the Family Support Program to take inquiries and provide information about counselling and mediation services. This will determine whether the assistance being requested is suitable and make referrals to other agencies if required. The Community Family Mediator will conduct interviews with parties by telephone or in person.

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through a recognized Diploma in social work, counselling or mental health plus 3 years’ experience in program delivery, particularly in the justice or family law area of related field. This is a Highly Sensitive Position and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check, along with a clear Vulnerable Sector Check is required.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Fluency in Inuktitut is required for the position. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land,Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets. Training in dispute resolution, mediation, conflict resolution and violence screening is a strong asset.
