About the role

The Department of Civil Engineering in the Schulich School of Engineering invites applications for a Senior Research Associate. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 24 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

Reporting to the Principal Investigator, the candidate will conduct high quality research in the area of hydrological modelling and prediction. The primary purpose is to assist the Principal Investigator and support the research team through providing skilled technical procedures such as the design of laboratory experiments as well as computational analysis to assist in the goals of the research. The person will record findings to collaborate on publications within the field of research in both a national and international level.

The position of is a full-time appointment, 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 7 hours per day. Flexible work hours and remote working arrangements are possible to accommodate critical deadlines. The working location is 2500 University Drive NW, Calgary, AB T2N 1N4 and language of work is English.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Analyze results and identify trends.
  • Prepare drafts of papers and reports as necessary.
  • Should be able to mentor graduate students and junior colleagues as necessary.
  • Establishes and maintains effective, productive relationships with staff, peers, immediate supervisor and senior management and with the campus community.
  • Manages own time effectively and ensures immediate reports to manager is kept informed of activities, and progress of work.
  • Provide technical support for other team members through technical advice.
  • Recommend change to processes or procedures.
  • Interact with other members of the team and undertake literature reviews.
  • Must be open to learning and development and be willing to accept new challenges and assignments.
  • Provide semi-skilled to skilled technical procedures to support the research project.
  • Demonstrated strong communication, team and customer service skills, and an ability to exercise judgment within established guidelines
  • Understanding of safety codes, standards, and systems related to specialization.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • PhD Degree in Geosciences
  • 5-7 years of related technical experience within the research specialty field of Computational Hydrological Modelling.
  • A record of peer-reviewed published journal articles. (at least 15)
  • Demonstrate proficiency in performing independent research as a PI or Project manager of research projects (at least 5 years).
  • Proven experience in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
  • Experienced in drafting grant proposals and managing the full grant lifecycle, including tracking progress, coordinating deliverables, and developing scientific reports for awarded grants.
  • Skilled in planning and coordinating international workshops, ensuring seamless execution and meaningful participant engagement.
  • The candidate will demonstrate strong communication, analytical and organizational skills.
  • Advanced skills in using Microsoft Word, Excel and Access.
  • Knowledge of University core business systems is desirable.
  • A positive attitude and the ability to work independently and as part of a team are critical to success.
  • Have a track record in peer reviewed publications in leading journals.
  • Experience with programming in Fortran and Python.
  • Experience with collaborative model development using GitHub.
  • Experience with processing large datasets.
  • Experience with high performance computing capabilities.
