The Opportunity: The Regional Director – Western Canada provides leadership and direction to our teams and programs in Western Canada, in accordance with the mission, values, strategic/operational plans, practice standards, and policies. This position completes a team of Regional Directors who oversee literacy initiatives across every province and territory of Canada. In this senior management role, the Regional Director embodies the strategic directions and vision of the organization across every aspect of our work in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and the Yukon.
Your main responsibilities and major duties: The Regional Director monitors and improves program impact; identifies and pursues opportunities for growth and program development in consultation with the Executive; and advocates for regional needs and priorities. The ideal candidate will bring an innovative and entrepreneurial spirit to operations in their region.
The Regional Director is a trusted and well-respected leader of a team of Regional Managers, Regional Coordinators, Community/Instructor Coordinators, Camp Coordinators, Interns, Camp Counsellors, Catalysts and Volunteers. The position will directly manage between three to five direct reports, dependent on active projects. The Regional Director reports to the Vice President, Programs & Impact.
Applications will be considered from candidates residing in Western Canada, with priority given to residents of Vancouver, Edmonton, Saskatoon and Winnipeg. Remote working arrangements are available. Regular travel within Canada will be required, particularly to visit regional teams and maintain government relations.
1) Influence and Development (50%)
- Lead and support the development of new regional literacy initiatives that deliver on United for Literacy’s 2025-2029 Strategic Plan.
- Work closely with Executive and Fundraising team to pursue regional strategies to sustain and/or expand operations by generating new public and private revenue opportunities.
- Build and sustain external relationships necessary to support organizational goals, liaising effectively with partners, participants, volunteers, donors and governments.
- Attend and contribute at community, provincial and/or national meetings, and effectively and accurately represent the needs and interests of the organization.
2) Impact and Performance (50%)
- Oversee regional teams to ensure effective implementation, evaluation and risk compliance of regional programs, activities and volunteer management.
- Prepare and manage regional annual plan and budget, monitor variances and initiate corrective actions as required.
- Build and manage effective teams that are aligned to organizational and strategic priorities with coaching, feedback and performance management
- Effectively communicate organizational goals and objectives to regional teams achieve the strategic plan and produce results for learners, partners and other stakeholders
Skills, Attributes and Requirements
Key required skills include strategic and entrepreneurial thinking; influencing; networking and relationship building; organizational and sector/issue awareness; risk management.
Further requirements include;
- Knowledge and understanding of key socio-economic issues, environment and stakeholders as they relate to literacy in Canada
- Proven experience in government, corporate and media relations
- Proven leadership skills and experience, particularly in the non-profit sector
- 7 years of progressive management and leadership experience
- Digital literacy – ability to work effectively and efficiently online using a suite of tools
- Experience travelling to remote locations
- University degree in a related field
Additional Assets (Preferred)
- Post-Graduate degree in Social Studies
- Lived or working experience with First Nation, Metis & Inuit communities
- French language skills
Working with United for Literacy
Salary: $78,750-87,500 (dependent on location)
Hours of Work: Monday-Friday 9:00-5:00pm (evening and weekend hours may be required)
