Join our compassionate and collaborative team as a Patient Registration Clerk . In this essential frontline role, you’ll be the first point of contact for patients and visitors—setting the tone for their health care experience and ensuring smooth administrative and communication processes.
What You Will Do As a Registration Clerk you will perform a variety of registration and switchboard functions such as registering patients for emergency services and diagnostic procedures in the computerized admission/discharge/transfer system. Process admissions, transfers and discharges. Operate the computerized telephone exchange, locate personnel through the use of pagers, answering services and the public address systems, and responds to emergencies. Perform reception, records management and other related clerical functions as required.
What You Bring Education & Experience
- Grade 12 and two years' recent, related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Skills And Abilities
- Ability to keyboard at 40 w.p.m.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.

About HIM This position is part of Health Information Management (HIM) , a leader in the collection, storage, and distribution of patient information across British Columbia. HIM is a consolidated Lower Mainland department of Providence Health Care , supporting Fraser Health, Vancouver Coastal Health, the Provincial Health Services Authority, and Providence itself.
With approximately 1,450 staff across 40 locations, HIM provides a broad range of services in Registration, Records Management, Transcription Services, Health Information Exchange, and Coding. Additional corporate services include Strategic Planning, Projects & Business Optimization, and Culture & Communications. HIM fosters an environment of growth and development—offering support and opportunities for staff to flourish across our diverse service areas.
Your Day to Day
- Register patients by collecting personal, demographic, and payment information using hospital systems.
- Assign or verify Personal Health Numbers (PHNs) using HealthNet and other databases.
- Prepare registration documents, obtain signatures, and apply patient ID bands.
- Collect payments, issue receipts, explain deposit policies, and manage patient valuables.
- Arrange and process documentation for patient transfers to other facilities.
- Review and update patient records, file documents, and photocopy information as needed.
- Handle urgent requests for patient information, ensuring proper release procedures.
- Operate the switchboard, transfer calls, use paging systems, and relay messages.
- Respond to emergency signals and follow established procedures for alerts.
- Perform general clerical tasks including typing, mailing, filing, and ordering supplies.
