Who we are looking for:

Due to continuing growth in our Health Care and Social Infrastructure practice, our EDO (Engineering Design Organization) is looking for a dynamic and motivated individual to take on the role of Design Manager – Health Care and Social Infrastructure based out of any of our GTA offices - Waterloo, Toronto, Mississauga, Markham, Whitby.

Working with an energetic and high performing team, this position offers a variety of work and will see you involved in:

Responsibilities

  • Budgeting: Responsible for managing the engineering design budget and providing key inputs to the Project Controls team.
  • Performance Management: Develop and propose own performance objectives; take appropriate actions to ensure achievement of agreed objectives, using the organization's performance management systems to improve personal performance. Or manage and report on team performance; set appropriate performance objectives for direct reports or project/account team members and hold people accountable for achieving them, taking appropriate corrective action where necessary to ensure the achievement of team/personal objectives.
  • Project Planning: Responsible for managing multi-disciplinary project delivery for health care and social infrastructure projects to produce a compliant, constructible design in accordance with Client requirements, Operation and Maintenance requirements, and Construction requirements. Manage the production of project and workstream plans, ensuring that all activities are identified, are appropriately organized and resourced to deliver project objectives, and comply with the organization's project and program management framework.
  • Project Delivery: Familiarity with different project delivery methods on larger projects, including Progressive Design-Build (PDB), Alliances, and Public-Private Partnerships (P3s), is an asset.
  • Design: Lead the creation and execution of design work plan and level of effort (LOE). Participate to continuously review and improve the overall project strategy to meet design schedule and budget with the ability to support staging and phasing requirements. Coordinate the preparation of the design criteria by the team leads.
  • Workforce Planning: Manage the preparation of short-term and annual workforce plans, using existing analytical frameworks and tools to identify the number and mix of staff required to meet the demand forecast.
  • Organizational Capability Building: Use the organization's formal development framework to identify the team's individual development needs. Plan and implement actions to build their capabilities. Provide training or coaching to others throughout the organization in own area of expertise to enable others to improve performance and fulfill personal potential.
  • Project Reporting and Review: Manage the project review process; provide stakeholders with accurate and relevant information and key recommendations at established review points to enable them to evaluate progress and agree on change.
  • Leadership and Direction: Convenes, chairs, and documents interdisciplinary design coordination meetings and brings forward updates and any critical issues that impact external stakeholders to the Project Manager. Serve as liaison between the construction contract administrator and engineering team during construction. Coordinates multidisciplinary problem resolution resulting from non-compliance with drawings and specifications at the site.
  • Technical Scope: Responsible for developing or verifying the technical scope of a project and working with disciplines to provide pricing during proposal, and subsequently work planning following project award to initiate design activities.
  • Financial Management and Control: Develop and/or deliver a plan for significant aspects of the financial management and/or control process. Participate actively in the preparation and adherence to a schedule of deliverables in collaboration with the Project Controls team.

Education

  • Bachelor’s (B.Sc.) degree or equivalent from a recognized college or university.

Experience

  • General Experience: 10+ years of design management experience on large ($250M+ CAPX), multi-discipline engineering teams for social infrastructure projects such as health care, community centres, correctional centers, justice facilities, and sports facilities.
  • Technical Experience: Technical proficiency and previous project design experience in clinical design, construction, or operational environment.
  • Expertise in human-centered design or healthcare facility planning, including knowledge of hospital regulations, CSA Standards for health facilities, and accessibility standards.

  • Familiarity with building information modeling (BIM) and integrated project delivery (IPD) approaches.
  • Experience in the Ontario healthcare planning and design environment, including various capital planning approval stages with the Ministry of Health, is an asset.
  • Good to have - Certification in Lean Six Sigma (Green/Black Belt) or equivalent, with experience in process mapping, root cause analysis (RCA), and key performance indicator (KPI) development.
  • Knowledge of scheduling software and engineering and capital cost estimating techniques is a definite asset.
  • Familiarity with different project delivery methods on larger projects, including Progressive Design-Build (PDB), Alliances, and Public-Private Partnerships (P3s), is an asset.
  • Member of the PEO, an important asset.
