ASSISTANT, GOVERNMENT RELATIONS

Headquartered in Toronto, the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) is a national, private, not-for-profit organization committed to high-performance sports excellence. We are the largest private supporter of high-performance sport in Canada, and we are responsible for all aspects of Canada’s involvement in the Olympic Movement, including the participation in the Olympic and Pan American Games.

Reporting to the Manager, Government Relations and Public Affairs, the Assistant of Government Relations plays an important role in fostering meaningful relationships with government officials and sport partners across Canada. This individual will provide administrative support to the Government Relations and Public Affairs team by helping draft communications materials, tracking public policy, performing research and assisting with government outreach initiatives through relationship building.

LOCATION

This position will be located in the COC office in Montreal, QC, at 500 René-Lévesque Boulevard West or in Toronto, ON, at 250 Yonge St. Suite 3000. The COC offers a hybrid work model that allows for up to two days of remote work each week.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES AND PRIORITIES

  • Provide administrative and logistical support for government relations activities and outreach initiatives
  • Assist in coordinating meetings, events, and communications with government officials and sport partners
  • Monitor and summarize key policy developments and government announcements relevant to the organization
  • Support the preparation of briefing materials, reports, and presentations for internal and external stakeholders
  • Help draft correspondence, meeting notes, and other communications to support government and stakeholder engagement
  • Conduct research to inform advocacy efforts and organizational positioning
  • Assist in maintaining accurate records and contact lists for government and stakeholder relations
  • Support planning and execution of political engagement and dignitary support from Canada during the Olympic Games
  • Demonstrate professionalism and strong bilingual communication skills in daily tasks and interactions
  • Contribute to a collaborative and fast-paced team environment by completing tasks efficiently and reliably
  • Other duties, as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS AND CRITICAL SKILLS

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree, College Diploma or equivalent experience in a related discipline such as Political Science, Public Policy, or Communications
  • 1-2 years’ experience in a related role (prior experience in government or non-profit organizations focused on public policy an asset)
  • Practical experience with coordinating stakeholder relations is desired

Skills and Abilities

  • Bilingualism required (English and French)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both official languages
  • Strong interpersonal skills involving an ability to problem solve in varied interactions with government officials, partners, external groups and staff
  • Understanding of the Parliamentary system in Canada and regular consumer of political news is an asset
  • Familiarity with the national sport system or organized sport an asset
  • Ability to perform research that supports long-term projects, presentations, and briefing notes
  • Ability to take initiative and multi-task in a fast-paced environment while attending to details
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to handle changing priorities and fluctuating work volumes
  • Ability to exercise tact and discretion in dealing with confidential issues and information
  • Proficient in MS Office and Outlook with an ability to learn new computer programs or software
  • Proficiency in building compelling PowerPoint presentations is an asset
  • Experience with emerging social media channels and trends, and familiarity with Artificial Intelligence platforms is an asset
  • Ability to independently complete administrative tasks as assigned
