Course Information

An introduction to investigating equity issues in urban schools. Teacher Candidates identify appropriate topics and investigative methods and reflect upon their findings in terms of relevant literature and their own experiences in urban schools. There are three components to this course: (i) the development of an action plan for researching their practice in schools, prior to the practicum; (ii) the implementation of the action plan, during practicum, and (iii) reporting on their findings, post practicum. .5 credit This course is taught online (synchronous and asynchronous).

The Faculty of Education invites applications for a Limited Duties Instructor to teach Capstone in Urban Schools: Critically Reflective Practice Part 2. This is a capstone course offered in the final term of the B.Ed. program, aimed at helping teacher candidates reflect critically on their practicum experience in urban schools through inquiry-based learning and equity-focused research.

The instructor will support students in developing and implementing small-scale practitioner inquiries, grounded in both literature and lived classroom experience. The course places strong emphasis on anti-oppressive education, social justice, and culturally responsive practices that address the needs of at-risk youth and marginalized communities.

Prepare and deliver course content aligned with approved learning outcomes.

Develop or revise the course outline in collaboration with the course coordinator (if applicable).

Guide teacher candidates through the process of developing, implementing, and reporting on critically reflexive action research projects.

Support student inquiry that critically reflects on systemic inequities and educational outcomes in urban school settings.

Facilitate both synchronous and asynchronous learning experiences as appropriate.

Provide ongoing feedback on student progress, culminating in assessment of final capstone presentations or reports.

Foster an inclusive, reflective, and equity-focused classroom environment.

Collaborate with the Teacher Education Office and course coordinator (if applicable) to ensure quality of delivery and alignment with program goals.

Responsibilities

You will be responsible for all activities associated with the successful delivery of the course, including but not limited to: developing, preparing, and delivering the course; setting and marking examinations, assessing the academic work of students, and reporting grades.

Candidates must be willing to undertake training as required by the Employer including, but not limited to, training in respect of health and safety, harassment and discrimination, and legislated service standards.

Qualifications

Qualifications (Minimum Required):

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in Equity Studies with a focus on Urban Schools or a closely related field of study.
  • Research based knowledge of urban schools particularly in contexts serving diverse or historically marginalized student populations.
  • Demonstrated record of teaching performance and experience in teacher education or urban school contexts
  • Knowledge of and experience in school-based research or action research and critical reflective practice.
  • Familiarity with practitioner-oriented research design, data collection, and analysis methods.
  • Expertise in two or more of the following areas:

o At-risk youth and resiliency in education
o Equity studies and social justice education
o Poverty and the achievement gap
o Refugee and newcomer student experiences
o Anti-racist and anti-oppressive education
o Gender and Sexual Diversity in Education

Preferred Qualifications / Assets:

  • Doctoral studies or Ph.D. in urban education, equity and social justice, or a related field.
  • Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) certification in good standing (current or held within the last five years) or other equivalent certification.
  • Experience mentoring teacher candidates or educators.
  • Strong record of community-engaged practice or research partnerships in urban school contexts.
  • Experience designing or delivering instruction in online and blended formats.
  • Demonstrated ability to build inclusive, affirming, and equity-driven classroom spaces.

Course offerings could be assigned to the workload of full-time faculty or to part-time faculty with seniority or preference rights in accordance with the Faculty Collective Agreement, or left unfilled based on operational/enrolment requirements. All positions are subject to budget approval.
