The Opportunity

The City of St. John's is seeking responsible adults who are interested in making a difference in their community. Crossing guards play an important role in keeping children safe on their way to and from school by assisting them with crossing the street in a safe and controlled environment. Crossing guards are assigned to primary and elementary schools during school arrival and dismissal times.

Accountabilities

  • Ensure the safety of children crossing busy street intersections
  • Maintain a pleasant, courteous and helpful attitude toward children, their guardians and the public
  • Report dangerous driving, crossing practices, or problems to the appropriate authorities
  • Escort children across the street using caution and displaying a crossing sign
  • Prevent children from crossing the street until it is safe to do so
  • Establish and maintain effective relations with the school children and the public

The successful applicant will be required to participate in all training programs applicable to this position and other related work. Qualifications

  • Familiarity with traffic regulations pertaining to pedestrian crosswalks considered an asset

  • Clear and effective communication

Other Requirements

  • Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) Criminal Record Screening Certificate AND Vulnerable Sector Check (or equivalent) – Dated not more than six months prior to hire

Working Conditions

Working outside in all weather conditions.

Hours of Work

This position works for (1) hour for the morning and (1) hour for each afternoon (2 hours per day), Monday - Friday (when school is in session)

Period of Employment:
September 2025 – June 2026. Must be available to attend mandatory training August 26, 2025.
