About the Position

This casual student position is based in the Buchanan Library, part of the Centre for Teaching, Learning, and Innovation (CTLI) at Lethbridge Polytechnic. Library Student Workers play a key role in supporting access to library services, spaces, and resources. Working at the front service desk, students in this role assist users directly or refer them to the appropriate person or service to meet their needs. Shifts are typically scheduled from 4:30–8:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 12:00–4:30 p.m. On Saturdays, based on availability and scheduling needs. All shifts take place on campus in the Buchanan Library.

Position Details

Primary Focus
This role supports front-line service delivery in the Buchanan Library by assisting users with accessing resources, spaces, and technology, and by providing excellent customer service and timely referrals.

Specific Accountabilities:

Circulation Services

  • Deliver excellent customer service at the library service desk
  • Check in and check out library materials using the library system
  • Assist users in locating books and other physical resources
  • Maintain and troubleshoot printers, photocopiers, and scanners
  • Re-shelve materials and ensure stacks are tidy and organized
  • Open and close the library according to established procedures
  • Follow all privacy and confidentiality protocols, including signing the Lethbridge Polytechnic Non-Disclosure Agreement
  • Record and track library usage statistics during shifts
  • Develop familiarity with library collections and circulation policies

Reference Support

  • Respond to basic reference questions or refer to appropriate staff as needed
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of library and CTLI staff roles for effective referrals
  • Monitor and assist with the library chat service, escalating queries when appropriate

Technology Support

  • Refer complex technical issues to ITS staff in line with training
  • Provide basic support with Wi-Fi, printing, password resets, Microsoft Office, and other common tools
  • Offer introductory assistance with Canvas and related software

Additional Duties

  • Support special projects or events as assigned

  • Contribute to creating a welcoming and inclusive library environment

Required Qualifications

Educational level

  • High School Diploma

Skills and Competencies

  • Reliable, punctual, and committed to providing consistent service

  • Demonstrates critical thinking and adaptability in dynamic situations

  • Able to assess and respond to user needs effectively

  • Works well with others and builds positive relationships with peers and staff

  • Self-motivated and able to complete tasks independently with minimal supervision

  • Strong interpersonal skills, including a welcoming and respectful approach to diverse users

  • Clear and effective communicator, both in person and through written channels

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working or volunteering in a library or customer service environment

Salary

AUPE Class Level 1 Step 1 $16.25/hour
