Job Description Position Purpose summary: The Day Camp Coordinator is responsible for coordinating, conducting, and supervising all day camp activities while assisting the leadership and direction of the day camp staff. They will provide a safe, caring, positive environment for all who attend the day camps while the children are participating in a variety of activities, making new friends, and learning about the Christian faith. The Salvation Army North York Temple, Day Camp, seeks to provide excellent children’s programming.

Accountabilities Program Leadership

  • Work with the Youth Ministries Outreach Coordinator to plan, coordinate and implement all programming for the North York Temple Salvation Army Summer Day Camp program.
  • Develop relationships with children, using empathy and active listening to encourage happy and well-developed children and youth.
  • Provide leadership of daily camp operations and assist with various camp activities including music, sports, arts & crafts.
  • Role models appropriate behaviors and attitudes.

General Accountabilities

  • Perform other relevant duties as assigned, i.e., set-up, and camp cleanup.
  • Ensure the highest standard of health and safety for all campers, volunteers, and staff.
  • Assist with ensuring the emotional wellness and personal development of campers.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and
  • safety policies and procedures.
  • Participate in the Summer Day Camp mentoring program for Day Camp staff and campers.
  • Support campers to develop socially, mentally, and spiritually.
  • Know and act in accordance with policies and procedures of The Salvation Army to ensure the safety and confidentiality of participants and information.
  • Act in cases of urgency or emergency in alignment with camp policies and procedures.

Staff Supervision

  • Provide general supervision of day camp staff, with the Youth Ministries Outreach Coordinator.
  • Assign staff duties and ensure they are completed.

Written and Verbal Communication

  • Clearly communicate directions for program activities
  • Document process, and reports as needed and recommendations to resolve issues and problems.
  • Create and maintain list of reports required for health and safety compliance purposes.
  • Support external reporting requests as needed.

Perform Other Related Duties As Required. CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT .

Governance Boards and Councils: None

Internal

  • Corps Officers, Youth Ministries and Outreach Coordinator, other staff, volunteers, and campers.
  • Lead staff in training/meetings and development.

External

  • Family members, community organizations & businesses

MANAGERIAL/Technical Leadership RESPONSIBILITY

  • Reports directly to: Youth Ministries and Outreach Coordinator
  • Direct reports for this position: Day camp Assistant Coordinator, Behaviour Support Worker, and Day Camp Counsellors

Financial And Materials Management

  • Collect and record camp fees from parents.
  • To learn, understand and maintain the Day Camp financial budget.
  • Ensure materials for Day Camp are sourced, purchased, and used adequately while staying within program budget.

Working Conditions

  • This is a temporary full-time position based on 35 hours per week.
  • Working environment is in a day camp setting both indoor and outdoor in generally agreeable
  • conditions with the following exceptions, exposure to tantrums and noise.
  • Ability to lift/move up to 29 lbs.
  • This job requires reaching, bending, and stooping frequently, working in a standing position for long periods of time.
  • Carry a cell phone for emergencies.

Normal hours of work: Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and includes a ½ hour unpaid meal break.

Some flexibility in scheduling is required. The hours of work and work schedule will be set by the supervisor

Conditions Of Employment- Submit as required a Police Record Check (vulnerable sector check) that is acceptable to The Salvation Army in its sole discretion.

  • This position is funded in part through the Canada Summer Jobs Program and the following represents the applicant criteria:
  • Is between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment,
  • Is a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment; and,
  • holds a valid Social Insurance Number and,
  • be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
  • *International students are not eligible participants. International students include anyone who is temporarily in Canada for studies and who is not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada.
  • An ongoing condition of employment is the ability to maintain immigration status to legally remain and work in Canada which is supported by valid immigration documents.

The above responsibilities must be performed in keeping with The Salvation Army’s Mission, Vision, and Values, in a professional manner, upholding our code of conduct. Education And Experience Qualifications Education, Qualifications and Certifications:

  • Completed Secondary School.
  • A current valid Standard First Aid and CPR certificate, or willingness to obtain is required.

Experience And Skilled Knowledge Requirements

  • Minimum of 2-year prior related experience in a day camp leadership role.
  • Prior experience supervising staff and volunteers
  • Have own computer with reliable internet connection for meetings that may be conducted online.
  • Must have excellent written, verbal and computer skills (this includes but not limited to video editing)

Compensation The target hiring range for this position is $17.61 to $22.01 with a maximum of $26.41.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
