Nurse Practitioner – South Island Urgent and Primary Care Clinics: (Group Contract equivalent to 2 FT roles) 100-2205
The six South Island Urgent and Primary Care Centers are seeking Nurse Practitioners for episodic primary care shifts.
The NPs shall provide team-based care within a network of primary care providers and expanded services to meet the ambulatory needs of urgent primary care patients.
The NPs shall provide, the following Direct Patient Care, Indirect Patient Care and Clinical Administrative Services during scheduled shifts for the urgent care service provided by the Clinic. UPCC policies and guidelines should be adhered to.
Direct Patient Care consisting of, but not limited to, consultations, physical examination, diagnosis of disease, minor surgery, advising, counseling and treating as required to provide non-urgent episodic care for conditions, illnesses and injuries and including:
- Basic in-office primary care services including non-life threatening illnesses or injuries that need treatment, such as sprains and simple fractures caused by minor accidents and falls, minor bleeding/cuts requiring simple wound closure;
- This also includes ICBC and WorkSafeBC cases, minor illnesses or injuries including commonly presenting primary care conditions, such as earaches, respiratory illnesses, eye irritation/injuries, nosebleeds, oral abscess or laceration, headache, corneal abrasion; abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, or dehydration, mild to moderate back pain and problems, skin rashes and infections, urinary tract infections; and completion of various forms;
- Assessment and treatment for mental health conditions;
- Management of chronic diseases for unattached patients;
- Referral for specialist consultation when appropriate.
Indirect Patient Care consisting of but not limited to:
- Patient-specific conferences, team meetings, telephone consultations, and chart or report writing;
- Arranging for appropriate follow up care, including assessments, procedures, investigations and/or therapy as may be appropriate, and interpreting the results and, where applicable, the preparation of follow-up plans for patients seen, treated and referred back to their primary care provider, where applicable, in accordance with professional standards as determined by the BC College of Nurses and Midwives;
- For patients transferring to an acute care site, following medical transfer processes and protocols, including preparing NP notes to accompany patients;
- Any additional indirect clinical services to support patients provided by the Medical Director at the clinic.
Clinical Administrative Services:
- Participation in the evaluation of the efficiency, quality and delivery of the Services, including and without limiting the generality of the foregoing, participation in medical audits, peer and interdisciplinary reviews, chart reviews, and incident report reviews.
The NPs will provide the Services via face-to-face appointments, telephone consultations and virtual care options where available and as appropriate based on the clinical circumstances and consistent with how the Services are provided at the UPCC.
The UPCC provides an opportunity for NP’s to accept unattached patients into their own practice (if applicable and/or desired).

The clinics are supported by excellent long-term staff including Family Physicians, Nurse Practitioners (at 3 sites), RNs, Social Workers and Mental Health Consultants available to assist with complex patient care.
We are an active teaching site for the UBC Family Medicine Residency Program.
