Position Summary

Reporting to the Coordinator of Library Services, the Library Technician II provides functional supervision to the campus library staff in consistent practice standards to ensure delivery of excellent library services to students, faculty and staff at North Island College; responsibilities include scheduling staff, organizing team tasks, circulation and interlibrary loan services, space planning and utilization. Providing overall support to the library team. This position requires an energetic, proactive, positive and well-organized individual, committed to providing a welcoming, efficient and inclusive library culture.

Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Provides functional supervision to Library Technician – Level I, temporary library staff and student assistants at the campus library; implements college library policies and procedures; promotes services and space utilization, showcasing library services and resources by way of topical displays, giving tours etc.

  2. Assesses functional issues and utilizes problem-solving and decision-making necessary to provide efficient and effective library services to students, faculty and staff.

  3. Performs circulation including charging/discharging library materials, collecting bill payments, processing Holds, etc.

  4. Removes flags from student accounts on Colleague, as needed

  5. Participates in the selection of the campus library technician I, temporary library staff and student assistants; provides training and performs functional supervisory duties, including delegating tasks, scheduling and advising on work performance.

  6. Collaborates with campus faculty and Collections Librarian on collection management initiatives, including selection and weeding.

  7. Promotes, schedules and provides individual and group library instruction in consultation with faculty.

  8. Maintains print and video collections; performs collection inventory.

  9. Ensures intercampus/interlibrary loan requests for print and media are processed efficiently using automated systems, following established policies and procedures.

  10. Provides reference and research assistance.

  11. Assists Customers with library catalogue, database and internet searching.

  12. Collects, compiles and submits campus and college wide library statistics monthly and annually.

  13. Participates in projects such as evaluating reference databases and formulating library procedures.

  14. Provides input into the development, design, and content of library forms.

  15. Monitors and distributes incoming library materials to students from partner institutions.

  16. Troubleshoots problems with equipment such as computers, and multi-function printers

  17. Advises the Coordinator of Library Services on campus library capital requests.

  18. Performs other library duties, as required.

Required Education & Experience

  1. Library Technician diploma

  2. Minimum of 2 years recent public services experience in an automated library.

Required Knowledge Skills & Abilities

  1. Familiarity with BC post-secondary library initiatives; resource-sharing consortia and networks

  2. Basic level of proficiency with MS Office including Word and Excel. Demonstrated familiarity with and proficiency in the use of journal databases and e-resources

  3. Excellent communication, interpersonal and customer service skills, with demonstrated ability to exercise tact, good judgment and diplomacy.

  4. Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to plan and prioritize tasks, ensure attention to detail and efficiently meet deadlines.

  5. Demonstrated ability in effective team behaviors such as active listening, sharing, balanced participation, and development of shared team goals.

  6. Ability to perform functional supervisory role at a campus library level.

  7. Ability to work independently, display initiative, and apply effective analytical thinking to solve problems.

  8. Ability to adapt to change with a positive attitude, demonstrating flexibility and effectiveness.
