Are you passionate about making a difference in the lives of families and children in the KFLA community? Do you believe in empowering families and children to reach their full potential? If so, we invite you to join the Maltby Centre’s Board of Directors!

We are seeking enthusiastic, forward-thinking individuals who are excited about driving transformative change in autism and child and youth mental health services. As a member of our twelve-person volunteer Board of Directors, you will play a crucial role in setting the strategic direction, championing quality care, and mitigating risks for our organization.

About Maltby Centre

Maltby Centre is a charity the Lead Agency in Kingston, Ontario, for children and youth mental health and also a leading provider of autism services. We hold Accreditation Canada’s Exemplary Standing in both mental health and autism treatment.

As the lead agency in KFL&A for these services, we are committed to providing the highest level of care.

  • Comprehensive Services: We offer treatment, counselling, and support services at five locations and through outreach programs.
  • Family Support: Our services include family support and respite care to address the needs of the entire family unit.
  • Bilingual Services: Services are available in both English and French to ensure accessibility for all community members.
  • Specialist Therapists: Our team includes an Indigenous Mental Health Worker and an LGBTQIA2S Therapist.
  • Inclusive Environment: We strive to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone.

Skills, Experience, and Qualifications

While board experience on a not-for-profit board is an asset, it is not necessary. We encourage applications from individuals of all backgrounds, especially those from equity-deserving and racialized groups.

We are inviting those with the following areas of experience to apply (though are not limited to these areas).

  • Legal Expertise
  • Systemic Knowledge of Mental Health and/or Autism
  • Fundraising
  • Marketing/Communications
  • A desire to volunteer for charity

Please note the following qualifications and exclusions for board membership in Ontario:

  • Legal Disqualifications: Individuals who are bankrupt, under 18 years of age, and individuals who are legally deemed unable to make decisions for themselves are generally disqualified from serving as board members.
  • Conflict of Interest: If an individual has a significant conflict of interest that cannot be managed or mitigated, they may be excluded from serving on the board.
  • Criminal Convictions: Certain criminal convictions, particularly those related to fraud or financial misconduct, can disqualify someone from serving as a board member.

Board and Committee Meetings

The Board meets six times per year, including one annual meeting usually held in September and one board retreat. Each board member also participates in one of our four standing committees:

  • Finance, Audit, and Risk: Meets monthly.
  • Governance: Meets four times per year.
  • Quality: Meets six times per year.
  • Executive Committee: Meets minimum of two times per year.

There are typically no committee or board meetings over the summer or in December.

Training and Development

New board members are paired with a buddy board member and provided with an orientation when they join. Additionally, there are ongoing opportunities for training and development to ensure you feel supported and equipped in your role.

Selection Process

The selection process for new board members includes a discussion interview to assess fit, followed by a reference and criminal records check. If all steps are successfully completed, a resolution at the board level will finalize the appointment before the new board member can start.
