About the role

POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the General Manager, the Health & Safety Coordinator will offer expert knowledge and skills to generate and promote a positive health and safety culture. This represents a key role in helping control occupational risk.

This position is responsible for ensuring that all safety legislation is adhered to, policies and practices are adopted, and help to plan, implement, monitor, train and review the protective and preventative measures that the company is required to follow as per the Occupational Health & Safety Regulations. Working closely with Management, the incumbent will work to minimize operational losses, occupational health problems, accidents, and injuries.

This position requires reliable transportation, as workdays alternate between two branch locations.

POSITION FUNCTIONS

  • Prepare health and safety strategies and develop internal policies
  • Carry out risk assessments and consider how risks could be reduced
  • Assist management in outlining safe operational procedures that identify and take account of all relevant hazards. Oversee hands-on training of operational procedures for all production employees
  • Maintenance and continual improvement of the safety program
  • Assist in the administration of WorkSafe claims in conjunction with the operations/management team
  • Develop practical and effective methods, both preventative and remedial, of promoting health & safety and safe working practices
  • Chair the JOHS meetings and monthly safety management meetings as required at production facilities
  • Perform in-house training with all employees about health and safety issues and risks
  • Perform various training initiatives, i.e. Lift-truck, WHMIS, and others as required
  • Take part in regular workplace inspections
  • Keep records of inspection findings and produce reports suggesting improvements/corrective action.
  • Keep records of incidents and accidents and produce statistics for management as needed
  • Keep up to date with new legislation and educate the appropriate staff
  • Liaise, when required, with officials from the WorkSafe BC on site customers to ensure the organization is compliant with mandatory regulations
  • Conduct accident investigations, in conjunction with Supervisors and employees, and produce subsequent reports and recommendations
  • Keep records of incidents and accidents and produce statistics for management as needed
  • Ensure company’s compliance with environmental regulations
  • Ensure annual third party inspections have been completed on equipment (Crane, forklift, scissor lift, etc)
  • Conduct weekly and/or monthly toolbox meetings with staff
  • Facilitate, in conjunction with management and WorkSafe BC, the Modified Return to Work program
  • Facilitate the health & safety information/training segment of the new employee orientation program for all departments
  • Develop and maintain training procedures and documents for every piece of equipment
  • Develop and maintain all documentation required to achieve/maintain WorkSafe COR Certification
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Post-Secondary education in Health and Safety or appropriate field.
  • Occupational Health and Safety Certificate or equivalent is preferred.
  • 5+ years’ experience implementing and promoting safe work practices and policies within a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with accident investigation, workplace inspection and job hazard analysis.
  • Understanding of current legislation, Codes of Practice, Bulletins and other safe work practice requirements and recommendations.
  • Confidence, with the proven ability to build credibility and strong partnerships at all levels.
  • Very strong sense of urgency with a proven record of following through to meet deadlines and commitments.
  • Proven ability to maintain confidences and ensure confidentiality of information and records.
  • Knowledge/experience in the WorkSafe COR Certification program
  • Complete proficiency with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other common applications
