Assistant General Counsel
About the role
We are currently working with a well-established regulatory body in Alberta that is seeking a skilled Assistant General Counsel for a 12-month fixed term in-house opportunity. This role is ideal for a lawyer who enjoys a mix of governance, compliance, policy development, and litigation support—and who thrives in a collaborative, mission-driven environment.
Reporting directly to General Counsel, the successful candidate will play a key role in advising on legal matters related to corporate governance, hearings administration, privacy, and regulatory oversight.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide legal advice related to governance, organizational policies, and compliance
- Support administrative tribunal processes, including discipline hearings and appeals
- Assist with privacy compliance, internal investigations, and industry claims
- Respond to civil claims involving the organization and its leadership
- Initiate and manage enforcement actions related to outstanding obligations
- Draft contracts, legal documents, and position papers
- Conduct legal research to support strategic and operational decision-making
Qualifications:
- J.D. or LL.B. and member in good standing with a Canadian law society (Alberta preferred)
- 5 to 7 years of post-call experience, ideally in corporate or commercial law
- Prior in-house or regulatory/legal policy experience is a strong asset
- Working knowledge of administrative law, privacy law, and employment law
- Comfortable with litigation processes and risk mitigation strategies
- Exceptional communication, judgment, and analytical skills
- Proven ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team
