TRIUMF

, Canada's particle accelerator centre. We are a publicly funded, not-for-profit research lab that is a hub for discovery and innovation.

Our mission is to serve as Canada’s particle accelerator centre. We advance isotope science and technology, both fundamental and applied. We collaborate across communities and disciplines, from nuclear and particle physics to the life and material sciences. We discover and innovate, inspire and educate, creating knowledge and opportunity for all.

TRIUMF's diverse community of nearly 600 multidisciplinary researchers, engineers, technicians, tradespeople, staff, and students create a unique incubator for Canadian excellence, as well as a portal to premier global collaborations. Fueling innovation and improving lives, we are committed to accelerating discovery and shaping a better world.

TRIUMF’s Life Sciences Division is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Postdoctoral Fellow in Radiochemistry to support an ambitious research program in Targeted Radionuclide Therapy (TRT), a rapidly evolving field in both academia and industry. This position is funded by the New Frontiers in Research Fund – Transformation (NFRF-T) and focuses on the production of high-priority medical radionuclides, including actinium-225, thorium-228, actinium-227, and others.

The successful candidate will play a central role in improving existing separation processes and supporting the routine production of these radionuclides, in close collaboration with TRIUMF’s production team. There will also be opportunities to explore and develop extraction techniques for additional radionuclides generated through the spallation of thorium targets (e.g. Pa-230/U-230).

The Postdoctoral candidate will report to Dr. Valery Radchenko (TRIUMF/UBC) and Dr. Qing Miao (TRIUMF) and will become part of the interdisciplinary team developing and supplying radionuclides to the New Frontiers for Research consortium.

Key Responsibilities

  • Providing research and technical support on the production, radiochemical purification, and radiolabeling of TAT radionuclides
  • Making the connection between the research and production team to secure the supply of Ac-225 and other relevant medical radionuclides for meeting deliverables on the NFRF T grant
  • Helping with student supervision
  • Assisting with grants and scientific manuscript preparation

Supervision Exercised:

May have opportunities to co-supervise co-op students and assist in supporting graduate students, in coordination with their academic supervisors.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. (received within 5 years) in Radiochemistry, Chemistry, Radiopharmaceutical Sciences, or a closely related discipline.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience with radioisotope handling, targetry, and radiochemical separation techniques.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong background in separation science and radiochemistry, or the competency to rapidly learn.
  • Excellent planning, project management, and organisational skills.
  • Strong communication abilities—both written and verbal.
  • High attention to detail and strong laboratory technique.
  • Proven ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Knowledge of radiation safety standards and relevant procedures.
  • Desired: Proficiency with radiochemical separations and radioanalytical techniques (e.g., ICP-MS, gamma spectroscopy, radio-HPLC, radio-TLC).

Additional Requirements

This position requires the individual to be trained and designated as a TRIUMF Nuclear Energy Worker (NEW). Training provided by TRIUMF.

Role Type: Individual Contributor

Work Hours: 35 hours per week
