Position Summary The Senior HSE Advisor plays a critical role in supporting CAM’s outage activities at the Syncrude site. This position is responsible for the daily administration, coordination, and implementation of CAM’s Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) program. The Senior HSE Advisor will work closely with CAM leadership, field supervision, subcontractors, and client representatives to ensure compliance with all regulatory and site-specific requirements.
This role involves both strategic oversight and hands-on field engagement, with responsibilities including training, inspections, audits, incident investigation, claims management, and continuous improvement initiatives. The ideal candidate brings extensive experience in turnaround or refinery environments and is passionate about promoting a strong safety culture through collaboration, mentorship, and proactive risk management.
Key Responsibilities
- Contribute to Turnaround Readiness Reviews (TRR) for project preparedness.
- Lead project start-up and HSE readiness reviews.
- Assist in the development and review of job/task-specific hazard assessments (HASAP, JHA, SPA).
- Coordinate and present bi-weekly HSE Communication Meetings as required.
- Conduct training and education sessions for field personnel on HSE practices and procedures.
- Perform audits and inspections, monitoring the implementation and quality of HSE processes and tools.
- Prepare and submit incident reports and summaries, and lead investigations using root cause analysis techniques.
- Maintain an HSE action register, tracking concerns and corrective actions.
- Keep a detailed logbook of significant events, conversations, and resolutions.
- Ensure completion and submission of HSE training sign-in sheets and records.
- Develop recognition and rewards programs to reinforce positive safety behavior.
- Conduct risk assessments and gap analyses between CAM, client, and subcontractor HSE programs.
- Participate in HSE team meetings, client EH&S meetings, and turnaround discussions.
- Manage injury claims and ensure accurate and timely C040 WCB Employers Report submissions.
- Oversee subcontractor safety management and support medical, first aid, and emergency services.
- Support the preparation of High-Value Learnings (HVL) presentations and other supporting documents (permits, PTAs, etc.).
Qualifications
- 10+ years of experience in plant/refinery construction, maintenance, or turnaround projects.
- Proven ability to work with union craft personnel.
- Strong knowledge of injury claims management processes.
- Clear proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Involvement with industry HSE associations, affiliations, or resource networks.
- Degree in Occupational Health & Safety or a related field preferred; equivalent work experience will be considered.
- Professional designation such as CRSP, CSP, ASP, or P.E. preferred, or the ability to meet equivalent certification standards.
- Strong communication, leadership, and mentorship skills.
- Solid understanding of incident investigation methods and root cause analysis.
- Experience with Enablon, SAP, or other HSE management software is an asset.
