About the Library Technician Role:

The Humber and University of Guelph-Humber Library is hiring a resourceful, collaborative, and user-focused Regular Part-Time Library Technician to support students, faculty, and staff at Humber's Lakeshore Campus.

As a key member of the Library’s front-line team, the successful candidate for this role will be the first point of contact for library users - offering friendly, knowledgeable research, fulfilment, and information support rooted in our values of empathy, equity, respect, and inclusion. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working in a dynamic academic environment and is eager to engage with a collaborative team.

Reporting to the Manager, Learning Services, the successful candidate will:

  • Provide in-person research help to Humber and University of Guelph-Humber students, faculty, and staff by conducting reference interviews, identifying information needs, and demonstrating the use of library resources;
  • Respond to informational and directional questions, and offer informed referrals to other campus departments (e.g., PALS, Math & Writing Centre);
  • Deliver fulfilment services using the Alma Integrated Library System, including signing materials in/out, processing holds and inter-campus loans, managing fines/fees, and maintaining user records;
  • Clearly explain and uphold library policies with tact and professionalism, guided by our Library Customer Service Charter;
  • Assist users with basic technology support (e.g., study room tech, printers, computers, Wi-Fi), and escalate to ITS when needed;
  • Liaise with campus partners (e.g., ITS, Facilities, Public Safety) to ensure smooth daily operations of library spaces;
  • Provide support and guidance to Student Assistants;
  • Collaborate with library teammates through committees, daily communication (Teams, email), training, and team meetings;

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Contributing to special projects (e.g., Technical Services, Archives projects) and library outreach (e.g., tours, info tables at events);
  • Assisting with maintenance of the library collection through stacks management and organization;
  • Participating in professional development by attending webinars and workshops;
  • Taking initiative in suggesting new projects or workflow improvements;
  • Adapting to other duties and shift changes as assigned.

Shifts/Hours of Work:

  • Up to 24 hours/week. Schedule may change depending on operational needs each semester.
  • In Fall (September – December) 2025: Shifts will be scheduled from 11am/11:30am - 6:00pm. The successful candidate for this position must be able to work 4 days each week: Mondays and Tuesdays required; 2 other days (Wednesday, Thursday, Friday) to be determined by operational need.

What you bring to the role:

The successful candidate will hold a Library Technician diploma and have a minimum of one year of customer service experience, ideally in a library or academic environment.

We’re looking for someone who is proactive, well-organized, possesses strong communication skills and who values and contributes to a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive library environment.

This role involves collaborating with the Library team, including Librarians, Library Technicians, Administrators, and Student Assistants, to support student success.

We value professional development, skill building, and teamwork. The successful candidate will be expected to stay connected with colleagues through regular in-person and online communication (via Microsoft Teams), and to stay up to date with training materials and team updates on a weekly basis. Interpersonal, teamwork, and communication skills are essential.

Required Skills:

  • Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment in a busy service environment;
  • Demonstrated excellence in customer service;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative mindset;
  • Willingness to learn about and refer Library users to the wide range of Humber resources and services across all campuses;
  • Familiarity with desktop applications (including Microsoft Outlook and Teams, Adobe Acrobat/Reader, web browsers) and Humber ITS support services is an asset.

Education

  • Two-Year Library Technician diploma.

Experience/Skills

  • Minimum of one year of customer service experience, ideally in a library or academic environment.
