About the role

Under the General Direction of the Branch Head – Water Planning and Project Delivery, the Water Distribution Planning Engineer undertakes planning of the City’s regional and local water supply and distribution systems, administers the watermain cleaning program and approves all watermain construction to ensure reliable water service at expected standards.

As the Water Distribution Planning Engineer**, you will:**

  • Develop plans for complex regional distribution operations for events such as branch aqueduct and feeder main shutdowns or emergencies to supply water to the City’s pump stations and maintain service to our customers.

  • Develop, implement and supervise the annual water main flushing program.

  • Be responsible for planning of the City’s regional and local water distribution systems to ensure that the level of service being provided is at acceptable and expected standards.

  • Develop and maintain the City’s hydraulic model of the water distribution system.

  • Analyze the hydraulic performance of the water distribution system using computer models.

  • Approve all water distribution designs and construction drawings to ensure compliance with all applicable City standards, planning policies, By-Laws, and Provincial regulations.

  • Participate on various committees to provide technical direction related to policy, planning and by-law development to enhance services or resolve water servicing issues.

  • Act as an advisor on a project or program team.

  • Perform other related duties consistent with the classification, as assigned.

Your education and qualifications include:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering.

  • Several years of experience in the field related to the duties of the position.

  • Demonstrated knowledge in water planning activities, water system design, cost estimating, and project management.

  • Knowledge of the design of water supply and distribution systems, treatment systems, hydraulic modelling and analyses, and watermain flushing.

  • Knowledge of City standards, planning policies, By-Laws, and Provincial regulations applicable to water distribution system design.

  • Knowledge of the development application and building permit application processes desirable.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently making and implementing decisions.

  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with employees at all levels of the organization, external contacts and the public, in accordance with the Respectful Workplace Standard.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage time constraints and prioritize workloads.

  • Must possess strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office, Microsoft Project and related applications.

Conditions of employment:

  • The successful candidate must maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada. If the successful candidate possesses a work permit, it is their responsibility to ensure the permit remains valid.

  • Professional Engineer designation and eligible for registration with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba (E.G.M.).

  • A Police Record Check satisfactory to the employer will be required from the successful candidate, at their expense.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class 5 Manitoba Driver’s License. The successful applicant will be required to provide a driver’s notice in force document upon request.
