About the role
Our client, a leading distribution company in Waterloo, is looking for an Assistant Controller to join their team. The Assistant Controller will be responsible for managing all aspects of the accounting cycle, from transaction entry to the production of financial statements. This role ensures accurate and timely financial reporting, compliance with relevant regulations across Canada and the US, and efficient management of financial operations. The Assistant Controller will report directly to the Fractional Controller and Owner to support budgeting, forecasting, and the day-to-day accounting function.
Key Responsibilities
- Directly responsible for all aspects of accounting and financial reporting.
- Perform day-to-day accounting functions, such as billing, accounts receivable, accounts payable, and invoicing.
- Detailed management of AP, terms of payment, cash flow management, including monitoring of early payment discounts.
- Customer management, including AR invoicing and adherence to invoicing and collection policy, including initiation and management of collection efforts.
- Recording of regular Intercompany transactions and reconciliation on a monthly basis.
- Process bi-weekly payroll for Canadian and US employees, ensuring compliance with payroll tax regulations.
- Preparation and presentation of weekly cash flow projections.
- Effective management of internal reporting and other deadlines.
- Preparation of annual financial projections.
- Prepare and analyze financial statements for variances to projections, including presentation of analysis and monthly financial reporting package to Owner and Fractional Controller.
- Prepare and file GST, PST, and state tax filings while ensuring compliance with provincial, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings.
- Development, implementation, and adherence to internal controls and procedures.
- Development and maintenance of full cycle accounting procedure manual.
- Manage month-end and year-end closing processes in accordance with agreed deadlines.
- Assess processes for efficiencies and streamline through the use of digitization and technology.
- Other accounting-related duties as assigned.
Required Skills and Experience
- CPA designation is considered an asset.
- 3-5 years of experience as a senior accountant or similar management position.
- Experience with foreign currency transactions.
- Proficiency in QuickBooks Online.
- Experience in QuickBooks Online Payroll is considered an asset.
- Ability to work independently.
- Exceptional attention to detail.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Proficiency in MS Office.
- A driver’s license and vehicle are a requirement.
