Job Description:
POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY:
This position works in conjunction with the Cooks to prepare meals and snacks for staff and children of the summer camping program according to set menus, and to ensure the cleanliness and smooth operation of the kitchen and dining hall.
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Administration
- In conjunction with the Cooks, ensure safe practices and all PLC Policies and Procedures related to food preparation and services are adhered to at all times.
- Provide coaching on safe practices to Kitchen Helpers and volunteers as needed.
- Work in conjunction with the Cooks and Hospitality Manager to coordinate special requests for programming and/or staff, including themed meals, the cooking option, etc.
General Duties
- Assist Cooks with overall preparation of meals according to pre-approved menus.
- In conjunction with the Cooks, ensure that scheduled mealtimes and snack deliveries are adhered to.
- Assist cooks in receiving and storing weekly food orders in a timely manner.
- Work with the Cooks to ensure that kitchen and dining hall cleanliness, sanitation and health and safety standards are maintained at all times.
- Assist the Cooks and Kitchen Helpers with end-of-week cleaning of the kitchen and dining hall before leaving for the weekend.
- In conjunction with the Cooks, ensure good quality food and food supplies are available in the designated staff fridge(s) for the number of staff remaining onsite over the weekend.
- Keep accurate records of any health and safety incidents you may be involved with (i.e. illness, injury, etc.).
- Attend staff devotions and meetings, unless excused by the Guest Services Manager or Camp Director(s).
- Ensure living accommodations are kept clean and tidy if living onsite.
- Be familiar with the PLC Summer Staff Manual, PLC Policies and Procedures and the TSA Code of Conduct.
- Other related duties as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- This is a full-time, temporary fixed term position at 40 hours per week until August 21, 2025.
- The individual is able to live onsite with a meals and accommodations taxable benefit if needed.
- This position requires long hours standing on hard surfaces.
- This position requires individuals to work in close proximity to others in a fast-paced and sometimes crowded environment. The work can be physically taxing and requires good mobility.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, Qualifications and Certifications:
- Food Safe Certification.
- Standard First Aid + CPR & AED.
- Review of Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector is required (no more than 3 years old). Employment is contingent upon results that are deemed non-threatening to the vulnerable sector.
- Clearance through internal Salvation Army child & youth abuse prevention protocols. Employment is contingent upon results that are deemed non-threatening to the vulnerable sector.
Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements:
- Minimum 2 year’s experience working in a busy kitchen/food preparation & service environment.
- Respect and understanding of The Salvation Army - its mission, culture, and values.
Skills and Capabilities:
- Be flexible and have a good disposition.
- Able to maintain a responsible level of maturity and leadership.
- Willingness to adhere to proper food preparation and storage, safe practices, health & safety, cleanliness/sanitization and good service to diners.
- Demonstrate support for the overall mission and goals of PLC summer camping through food service.
Compensation:
The target hiring range for this position is $17.33 to $21.66 with a maximum of $25.99.
Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
